Chowan Rallies To Salvage Split Against Warriors

CENTRAL, S.C. – Despite allowing a season-high in runs during the doubleheader, the Chowan Softball team managed a series split with Southern Wesleyan rallying from a nine run deficit to take the nightcap on Saturday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORES

Mckenzie Misenheimer led the Hawks at the plate going 6-7 with a double, a triple, three runs scored, and three RBI.

Serena Riley, Haleigh Reid, and Tessa Nicholson posted three hits each.  Nicholson posted two doubles.  Megan Leon posted three RBI in the series.

Alex Bishop picked up the save in the nightcap with a scoreless inning after coming in with no outs and runners on the corners.  Haley Jensen collected her first career win in relief.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: Chowan 5, Southern Wesleyan 22 (five innings)

Southern Wesleyan took control of the contest early scoring 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning on eight hits and an error.

Chowan chipped away in the top of the second as Caston Garland singled before Haleigh Reid drew a walk.  The pair moved up on a wild pitch before Kaitlyn Matheny picked up a RBI single.  Lindsey Richter hit a sacrifice fly to trim the deficit to 10-2.

The Warriors responded with five runs in the second.  Tessa Nicholson doubled in the third before coming around to score on Mckenzie Misenheimer's infield single, 15-3.

The Warriors put the finishing touches of the rout in the third inning scoring seven more runs to lead 22-3.

Haleigh Reid scored in the fourth on a wild pitch and Serena Riley plated Mckenzie Misenheimer in the fifth.

Game Two: Chowan 13, Southern Wesleyan 12

SWU would take a 6-0 lead in the opening two innings of the night cap.

Chowan answered in the top of the third inning as Lindsey Richter and Mckenzie Misenheimer produced a one-out single.  Haleigh Reid singled to plate Richter before Tessa Nicholson drew a walk to load the bases.  Kaitlyn Matheny hit a sacrifice fly to trim the deficit to 6-2.

The Warriors would get those run back in the bottom of the third inning to lead 8-2.  The lead would move to 11-2 in the fourth.

Chowan mounted a rally in the top of the fifth after a SWU pitching change.  Lindsey Richter started the rally with a lead-off walk before scoring on Mckenzie Misenheimer's triple to right center.  Haleigh Reid singled home a run before another pitching change, 11-4.  Tessa Nicholson picked up a single before Elizabeth Heller drew a walk to load the bases.  Caston Garland drew a walk to plate a run before Serena Riley plated a pair with a single to left, 11-7.

SWU moved back to their starting pitcher in the inning recording a pair of outs.  Chowan benefitted from an error as a pair would score.  Mckenzie Misenheimer singled to plate a run to trail 11-10.

Tessa Nicholson sparked a rally in the sixth inning with a one-out double to center.  Kaitlyn Matheny and Serena Riley drew a walk to load the bases with two-outs.  Megan Leon would unload the bases with a double to right center and take a 13-11 lead.

The Warriors closed the gap in the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo home run.  SWU made some noise in the bottom of the seventh as the Warriors picked up a pair of hits to lead off the inning.  Alex Bishop entered the contest with runners on the corners and no one out.  Bishop handcuffed the Warriors with three straight pop-ups that never left the infield to pick up the save.

UP NEXT

Chowan will look to shake off the slow start as the Hawks take on Converse in Conference Carolinas action on Sunday, March 26.  First pitch is slated for 12pm at Tyger River Park in Duncan, S.C.
