CU Newsletter: December 2023

12/19/2023 1:05:00 PM

Dear Hawks Fans,

Warmest Holiday greetings to everyone in Hawks Nation! It is hard to believe that we wrapped up our 2023 Fall Semester at Chowan and we are winding down to what we pray is a calm and peaceful holiday season for everyone.

We had an exciting Fall sports season and we appreciate every single one of you following along with us all semester long. We are just into the first third of our winter sports season and before you know it, spring sports will be upon us.

In collegiate athletics we often live season to season, but it is in those seasons that the best moments of our department are created. With a wonderful and dedicated athletic department staff partnered with some of the best student-athletes in all of NCAA D2 here on our campus, it is easy to create the moments that get etched into the history books. We certainly have many to brag about so far this year.

As we enter into the New Year, we pray that you all take the time to reflect on the many great moments that we have experienced since students returned in August. There have been triumphs and also setbacks but through each one, the heads down tenacity our Hawks have shown has risen to top.

We are just half way through the year and yet inside this newsletter you will find just how great our student-athletes, our fans, our parents, our coaches, our faculty, and our staff here are. So please keep reading, keep supporting, and know that we hope that each of you in Hawks Nation know that you are appreciated. You are a blessing to us in so many ways!

Yours in Athletics,

Patrick Mashuda, Assistant Vice President for Athletics/Director of Compliance

The Women’s Basketball team is continuing to build for the next step for the program coming off another Conference Carolinas semifinal appearance after going 18-11 overall.

To start off the 2023-24 season, Chowan faced nationally-ranked Glenville State and Catawba and fell to an 0-3 record.  Since then, the Hawks have rattled off three straight wins in Conference Carolinas action to even their record at 3-3 with a 3-0 mark in league play.  Chowan is scheduled to play Virginia State on Dec. 30 in Petersburg.

Newcomer Tynasia Bunting leads the team averaging 12.5 points per game, while returners Sydney Roberts (11.2 points) and Imani Hickman (11.0 points and 8.0 rebounds) help lead the program. Chowan has five returners to fit with 10 newcomers.

On the men's side, Chowan started the season strong with back-to-back wins before falling in three straight.  The Hawks sit at 6-5 on the season led by local product, Daylan Askew, averaging 18.5 points per game.

The veteran presence of nine returners coupled with seven newcomers has the Hawks pointed in the right direction.  RJ Wilson (13.4), and Preston Le Gassick (12.6), have the Hawks scoring at a high percentage.

Freshman Damerius Summers is averaging 12.3 points per game in his last three contests.

Chowan heads to Elizabeth City State for a return trip on Dec. 30.

MEN'S SOCCER ON TOP ONCE AGAIN

Chowan started off the 2023 season struggling to find the back of the net and the win column going 0-3-1 in their first four matches.  On September 16, things started to click for the Hawks trouncing Erskine, 8-2, on their way to the first win of the season.  That win sparked a nine-match unbeaten streak (6-0-3) to send the Hawks soaring to the top of the league table.

On October 25, with two matches to go in the regular season, the Hawks were handed a 2-0 setback at the hands of their rival Mount Olive.  Not only did the Hawks see their unbeaten streak snapped, but they also saw their chance for a divisional title slip away, as well as a long standing home unbeaten streak snapped that spanned over four years.

The group stayed resilient and picked up a 2-1 victory over Francis Marion to conclude the regular season and secure the second seed in the Conference Carolinas Men's Soccer Championship.

The Hawks would get a bye until the semifinals, where Chowan would draw another rival, Barton.  Barton would take the opening goal of the match into the halftime break.  Hlynur Fridriksson put the Hawks on the board in the 62' before the Bulldogs found the go-ahead goal in the 71'.  Chowan would not panic as the Greensboro, N.C. native, Tylar Elliott, playing in front of the home fans at Macphearson Stadium at Bryan Park in Greensboro found the bottom left corner in the 87'.  From that point, Chowan dominated the attack before Junior Smith found the game-winner in the 108' to send the Hawks into the finals.

In the finals, Chowan grabbed the momentum quickly as Leke Ademola scored the opening goal in the 10' against the defending champions, Converse.  The Valkyries continued to push forward in the second half finding the match-tying goal in the 62'.  Despite several chances late in the contest by both sides, the match would end in a draw and head to a penalty shootout.

Alex Espinoza, Junior Smith, and Harri Lovett would convert their kicks from the mark, while Chase Jansen would deny Converse on all three attempts to allow Chowan to hoist the trophy for the second time in program history.

Chowan earned the 10th seed in the NCAA Men's Soccer Super Region II bracket and traveled to Melbourne, Fla. to take on Lynn in the first round.  Not only did the Hawks have to navigate through the Fighting Knights of Lynn, but had to endure a tropical storm during the contest.  The Hawks converted on their only shot in the first half to head into the intermission knotted up at one.  Lynn found a goal early in the second half, but the Hawks would not give up and found the strength to connect in the 85' as Junior Smith, played his junior college years at nearby Eastern Florida State and did not disappoint posting a pair of goals in the contest.

The match would head to overtime and ultimately in a penalty shootout.  Chowan would match Lynn shot-for-shot until the Fighting Knights denied the Hawks on the 10th attempt to fall 9-8.

Chowan collected four All-Conference selections with Harri Lovett, Bradley Binns, and Chase Jansen earning First Team selections.  Charlie Birch was named Third Team.  Lovett continued to add to his collection of awards with D2CCA and USCA All-Region honors.
