Chowan Drops Pair On Final Day At VSU

PETERSBURG, VA. – The Chowan Volleyball team could not find their groove on the final day of the VSU Trojan Classic as the Hawks dropped a pair of outings on Saturday afternoon.

Diana Rodriguez, Kolleen Priest, and Nia Baskin led the offense with 11 kills.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez posted nine kills.  Rodriguez added 19 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Chowan 0, West Virginia State 3

West Virginia State opened the contest on a 9-1 run as Nia Baskin tallied the only kill for the Hawks.  Baskin would add a service ace prior to a kill by Kolleen Priest.  Chloe Putnam and Haydon Ahlers teamed up for a block as the Yellow Jackets increased their lead to 18-7.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez, Baskin, and Madison Hall added a kill each before the end of the set, 25-10.

In the second set, Nyah Powers opened the set with a pair of kills.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Nia Baskin posted a kill each to lead 5-4.  Baskin, Kolleen Priest, and Chloe Putnam traded kills with WVSU.  The Yellow Jackets finished off the set with a 25-15 victory.

WVSU opened the final set on a 7-3 run as Nia Baskin and Madison Hall posted a kill each.  Kolleen Priest posted back-to-back kills for the Hawks before the Yellow Jackets increased their lead to 17-7.   WVSU finished off the match 25-11.

Chowan 0, Virginia State 3

Nia Baskin and Madison Hall opened the scoring for the Hawks with a pair of kills.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez added three kills as Virginia State led 14-9.  The Trojans would rally with eight straight points to finish off the opening set, 25-12.

Kolleen Priest and Anixa Rosa-Martinez started the second set with a kill to give the Hawks a 5-2 lead.  Nia Baskin tallied a pair of kills as the Hawks stayed close with Trojan miscues.  Priest and Baskin added a kill down the stretch as VSU took the set 25-20.

Haydon Ahlers notched a kill and a block to help the Hawks lead 5-0 early.  Diana Rodriguez, Nia Baskin, and Ahlers pushed the lead to 8-4.  Sydney Ginaitt recorded a service ace prior to a three kills by Kolleen Priest and a kill by Ginaitt to lead to 15-11.  Chloe Putnam and Anixa Rosa-Martinez added a kill before VSU rallied down 17-14.  After a kill by Rosa-Martinez, the Trojans rattled off the final eight points to finish off the set, 25-18.

UP NEXT

Chowan continues their road trip as the Hawks travel to Florence, S.C. to compete in the FMU Invitational on Saturday, September 10.  The Hawks will take on Converse and Fayetteville State.
