MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Volleyball team suffered a 3-1 defeat in their home opener against Conference Carolinas rival, Mount Olive, on Tuesday evening.

Haydon Ahlers paced the Hawks with seven kills. Anixa Rosa-Martinez, Chloe Putnam, and Kolleen Priest notched six kills each.
Diana Rodriguez led the defense with 26 digs, while Anixa Rosa-Martinez added 14 digs, and Ellie Middleton tallied 12. Sydney Ginaitt nearly posted the double-double with nine assists and nine digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Chowan opened the match on a 4-1 run as Chloe Putnam started the set off with a kill. Back-to-back kills by Nyah Powers led to a kill by Anixa Rosa-Martinez. Haydon Ahlers tallied a pair of kills along with a kill by Putnam and one by Alexa Woolson put the Hawks on top 11-8.
Sydney Ginaitt and Haydon Ahlers registered a kill to lead 15-12 before Mount Olive rattled off seven straight points on miscues by the Hawks to take the lead 19-15. Kolleen Priest ended the offensive stall with a kill. Priest added a kill before UMO took the set 25-19.
Chowan benefitted from the early miscues by the Trojans to lead 9-5 as Anixa Rosa-Martinez posted a kill and Sydney Ginaitt notched a service ace. Both teams traded rallies but the Trojans finished off the set 25-22.
Knotted up at 7-all in the third set, Haydon Ahlers registered a kill to spark a rally for the Hawks. Alexa Woolson added a service ace and Kolleen Priest notched a kill to put the Hawks up 11-7. Service aces by Sydney Ginaitt and Diana Rodriguez kept the Hawks in front 21-17. Chloe Putnam tallied a pair of kills before Nia Baskin and Anixa Rosa-Martinez finished off the set with a kill for the 25-21 victory.
Chloe Putnam and Anixa Rosa-Martinez notched a kill each to put the Hawks on the board in the fourth set. The Trojans would take control of the set with an 11-2 run as Kolleen Priest notched the lone kill in the run. Haydon Ahlers added a kill before the end of the set.
