Chowan Takes Victory From ECSU In Split At VSU Tourney

PETERSBURG, VA. – The Chowan Volleyball team picked up a split on the opening day of the VSU Trojan Classic on Friday at Virginia State.  The Hawks would fall to Shippensburg before battling through a five-set victory over rival, Elizabeth City State.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORES

Kolleen Priest and Anixa Rosa-Martinez paced the offense with 18 kills each.  Nia Baskin tallied 13 kills, while Chloe Putnam added 12 kills.  Rosa-Martinez netted her second double-double of the season with 11 kills and 10 digs against Elizabeth City State.

Diana Rodriguez paced the defense with 46 digs (5.11 per set).  Sydney Ginaitt posted 31 assists and 19 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Chowan 1, Shippensburg 3

Sydney Ginaitt started off the match with a service ace before the Raiders tallied the next five points.  Shippensburg extended their lead to 17-8 before Diana Rodriguez posted a kill.  Kolleen Priest and Chloe Putnam added a pair of kills before the Raiders took the opening set 25-20.

The second set featured a back-and-forth affair with both sides trading points to even the score at 12-all.  Shippensburg pushed ahead 18-14 before Anixa Rosa-Martinez turned the momentum with a kill.  Haydon Ahlers added a kill as the Hawks started their rally.  The Raiders would lead 23-19 before Rosa-Martinez notched a service ace to even the score at 23-all.  Kolleen Priest finished off the set with a kill to take the set 25-23.

Attacking errors would hinder the Hawks in the third set as Shippensburg opened up a large lead, 9-1.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Chloe Putnam notched a kill as the deficit moved to 20-5.  Putnam added a pair of kills and Madison Hall posted a kill before the Raiders finished off the set 25-9.

The Raiders continued the momentum to forge ahead to a 9-3 lead.  Kolleen Priest added a pair of kills along with a kill by Nia Baskin.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Madison Hall helped close the gap, 16-14.  Priest notched a kill for the final point for the Hawks as Shippensburg took the set and match 25-17.

Chowan 3, Elizabeth City State 2

Madison Hall started off the set with a kill.  Chloe Putnam, Kolleen Priest, and Anixa Rosa-Martinez joined in on the attack to give the Hawks an 11-10 advantage.  After three errors by the Vikings, Chowan used a pair of kills by Priest and a kill by Putnam and Rosa-Martinez allowed the Hawks to push their lead to 18-12.  Nyah Powers added a kill along with an ace by Diana Rodriguez to continue the rally.  Rosa-Martinez and Ellie Middleton finished off the set, 25-15, with a kill.

ECSU took an early 10-3 advantage as Nia Baskin recorded the lone kills for the Hawks.  Kolleen Priest added a kill as the Vikings pushed their lead to 14-7.  The Vikings would even up the match with a 25-18 set two victory.

The Vikings used the Chowan miscues to push out to an early lead and finished off the third set with a 25-11 victory.

The fourth set featured 10 ties as neither side was able to get more than two points of separation until Haydon Ahlers gave the Hawks a 21-18 advantage.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez, Ahlers, and Nia Baskin finished off the set with a kill to force a fifth set with a 25-20 set victory.

Sydney Ginaitt started off the set with a service ace.  Brianna Moye and Anixa Rosa-Martinez gave the Hawks a 3-0 lead.  Nia Baskin contributed a pair of kills to extend the lead to 6-1.  Kolleen Priest and Moye added a kill to thwart the Viking comeback.  With the Hawks leading 10-7, Morgan Tucker used a kill to spark the finishing rally.  Ahlers posted a pair of kills before Rosa-Martinez ended the match with a kill, 15-7.

UP NEXT

Chowan returns to Petersburg to finish up the tournament as the Hawks take on West Virginia State and Virginia State on Saturday, September 3.  First serve is slated for 11am against WVSU followed by VSU at 5pm.
