Chowan Volleyball Caps Off Season Opener With Split

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.VA. – The Chowan Volleyball team split the opening day of the Ram Rumble on Friday afternoon picking up the win against Alderson Broaddus to cap off the day.

Anixa Rosa-Martinez paced the Hawks with 21 kills while adding 14 digs.  Madison Hall tallied 14 kills, with Nia Baskin collecting 12 kills and Kolleen Priest posting 10 kills.

Alexa Woolson recorded 36 assists and 12 digs.  Diana Rodriguez notched 32 digs including a team-high 20 digs in the win over ABU.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Chowan 1, Shepherd 3

The Hawks kept the opening set close in the early going as kills by Chloe Putnam, Anixa Rosa-Martinez, Haydon Ahlers, and Nia Baskin closed the gap to 12-10.

Three errors and a block by Nia Baskin and Madison Hall allowed the Hawks to take a 14-13 lead.

Knotted up at 16-all, Shepherd finished off the set with 10 straight points to take set one 25-16.

Shepherd opened up the second set on an 8-1 run as Anixa Rosa-Martinez tallied the lone kill for the Hawks.  Chowan closed the gap to 13-9 after a kill by Rosa-Martinez and a duo block with Nia Baskin.

The Rams finished off the second set 25-16.

In the third set, both teams traded runs as the score was knotted up at 13-all.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez sparked a run with a kill followed by a service ace by Morgan Tucker, block by Nyah Powers and Kolleen Priest and a kill by Priest to extend the lead to 18-13.

Chowan continued to hold off the Rams as Nia Baskin collected two kills and one by Anixa Rosa-Martinez before the Hawks finished off the set 25-20.

The fourth set started with a 10-4 run by Shepherd before the Rams doubled up the score 16-8.

Nia Baskin and Nyah Powers slowed the run with a kill each as Shepherd took the final set 25-12.

Chowan 3, Alderson Broaddus 1

The Battlers started off the match with a slim 9-6 lead before a 5-0 run by the Hawks took the lead 11-9.  Madison Hall recorded a pair of kills along with a kill by Anixa Rosa-Martinez.  Hall sparked another run to push the Hawks to a 15-10 lead.

Chloe Putnam, Brianna Moye, and Anixa Rosa-Martinez tallied a kill each to push the advantage to 22-17.  Nia Baskin, Rosa-Martinez, and Madison Hall finished off the set for the 25-19 victory.

Chowan took an 11-6 advantage in set two following a kill by Kolleen Priest and five errors by ABU.  Sydney Ginaitt, Anixa Rosa-Martinez, and Madison Hall posted a kill along with a service ace by Alexa Woolson put the Hawks on top 19-13.

Following a timeout by the Battlers, ABU went on a 10-2 run to steal away the set 25-23.

The Hawks regained the set advantage in the third set holding a slim 10-8 advantage as Nia Baskin and Madison Hall posted a kill each.  The lead would move to 18-12 as Morgan Tucker posted a service ace to force a timeout.

After the timeout, Chowan capped off the set with a 7-2 run aided by errors by the Battlers, 25-14.

In the final set, Chowan started off strong with a 7-2 lead.  Alexa Woolson started the run with a pair of service aces.  Madison Hall, Anixa Rosa-Martinez, and Kolleen Priest added a kill each.

Alderson Broaddus rallied to take a 9-8 and 11-10 lead.  The Hawks countered with a 5-0 run as Anixa Rosa-Martinez posted two kills and Nia Baskin added one to force a timeout out leading 15-11.  Haydon Ahlers notched a kill as ABU evened the score at 18-all.

Nyah Powers posted a service ace to spark the final run for the Hawks.  Madison Hall and Kolleen Priest finished off the set with a kill for the victory.

Chowan wraps up the Ram Rumble on Saturday, August 27 as the Hawks take on Dominican at 1pm.
