Chowan Student-Athletes Soar In 2021-22

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Athletic Department celebrated another successful academic and athletic year during the 2021-22 year.  The conclusion of the year was marked by the Chowan University Annual Awards Day Convocation and Student-Athlete Awards Day Blue Carpet Banquet.

The Hawks wrapped up the year with a 3.01 grade-point average posting 12 programs recording a 3.0+ GPA for the 2021-22 year.  The Softball team led the way with a 3.51 GPA followed by the Women's Tennis program (3.42) and Volleyball (3.40).  Women's Cross Country notched a 3.34 as the Baseball program posted the top men's GPA with a 3.21.  Men's Tennis (3.18), Women's Soccer (3.11), Acrobatics & Tumbling (3.10), Bowling (3.10), Men's Swimming (3.03), Men's Golf (3.03), and Women's Golf (3.00) finished off the list.

Chowan had 47 student-athletes record a Perfect Hawk semester with 4.0 GPA.  Patrick Krack, Shane Rademacher, Harrison Buckman, Logan Jeffrey, Rafiq Abdul-Wahid, J'Vin Farmer, David Keck, Michael Smith, Eric George, Lucas Gorman, Nathan Townsend, Alex Wildeboer, Ronaldo Williams, Zouhair Bettache, Fabrizio Infante, Kyle Sheridan, Hesley Masara, Kaitlin Brunelli, Hannah Eden, Jesse Gentry, Courtney Lamb, Meredith Morgan, Hannah Naifeh, Keira Teserovitch, Bailey Wilcox, Paige Wilhelm, Haydon Ahlers, Madison Hall, Chloe Putnam, Kashara Simpson, Morgan Grosse, Naila Smith, Brooke Woods-Pennell, Mackenzie Burgoyne, Cristina Flores, Allison Traub, Erin Garza, Erica Mock, Connor O'Brien, Will Wicks, Calvin Ahoume, Sam Hall, James Randall, Katie Houston, Elizabeth Stokes, Marisa Lamb, and Michelle Maksimovic finished off the semester with 4.0's.

Several student-athletes were honored during the Chowan University Awards Day Convocation.

For the Outstanding Athlete Awards, Destiny Robinson (Women's Basketball), Toby Sims (Men's Soccer), and Bryce Witt (Football) were selected for their outstanding athletic seasons.

Harri Lovett (Men's Soccer) racked up the awards after being named the Best All Around Student Award.  Lovett also earned the Cheryl Joy Hobday McElheney Business Award, "Ethics In Action" Award and Dr. Patricia Williams Alpha Chi Chapter Member of the Year Award.

Three student-athletes were selected for the Order of the Silver Feather: Patrick Krack (Baseball), Meredith Morgan (Softball), and Destiny Robinson.  The Order of the Silver Feather is given to those students who have been especially outstanding to their service to the campus community and whose loyalty to Chowan University has been extremely noteworthy.

Erica Mock (Women's Swimming) and Kashara Simpson (Women's Basketball) were recipients of the Faith in Your Future Award.  This award is presented to the student who best exemplifies the university's mission and vision by consistently demonstrating the ability to achieve her greatest potential in learning and service.

Receiving the Merit Award was Welinton Mariano from the Baseball team.  This award is presented to a graduating senior judged to have achieved at a high academic level in spite of obstacles which would have deterred or defeated a less determined or devoted individual.

Patrick Krack was awarded the Vera Parker Womble Christian Service Award.  This award is given to a student in recognition of Christian faith and commitment expressed in service and good works benefiting the University and community, classmates and friends, faculty and staff.

The Drs. Vaughan and Miles Outstanding Business Student Award went to Alexa Woolson from the Volleyball team.

Paige Wilhelm, Softball, was awarded the Joseph Lee Parker Scholarship.  The scholarship is awarded to a rising junior or senior Sport Science student. The recipient must be nominated by the faculty of the department. He or she must be a good role model, demonstrate scholarly pursuits, and show evidence of leadership.

From the Women's Soccer program, Cristina Flores, was awarded the Amy Rozmus Hammond Scholarship.  The scholarship is awarded by the faculty to a deserving student pursuing a career in a Sport Sciences related field.

The Raymond Memorial Science Scholarship was awarded to Ina Womack of the Softball program.  The scholarship is awarded to a returning biology student who is selected by the faculty.

Jeleah Delancy (Women's Swimming) was selected for the Mary E. Wood Science Award.  This award is given by the faculty of the Department of Biology in memory of Professor Emeritus Mary E. Wood. This award is presented to an outstanding graduate whose major course of study has been biology.

In mathematics, Carlos Pasula (Men's Lacrosse) was the recipient of the Acheson Harden Mathematics Award, as a currently enrolled freshman or sophomore with the highest overall GPA with at least six hours of mathematics toward the major and at least one calculus course, and Ciara Ortega (Volleyball) was selected for the Senior Mathematics Award.  The award is presented to the graduating senior with a major in mathematics who has the highest overall GPA.

Raydarius Freeman, Football, was selected for the Outstanding History Student Award.  Annery Abreu, Women's Golf, earned the Outstanding Criminal Justice Student Award.  Keira Teserovitch, Softball, picked up the Psychology Award, while Mary-Grace Crosby, Softball, was named to the Department of Religion Honor Award.

Dr. Charles Bentley Outstanding Teacher Education Student Award was awarded to Kaitlin Brunelli of the Softball team.  The criteria for selection include scholarship as evidenced by GPA, personal attributes, educational dispositions, and professionalism.

Hannah Eden, Softball, was selected for the Student Teacher of the Year Award.  The criterion for selection includes exemplary performance during the recipient's student-teaching experience, including effective instructional planning, assessment skills, classroom management skills, leadership, and collaboration.

During the Chowan University Student Research Conference, Harri Lovett was awarded the Best Business, Sport Management, and Integrative Studies Paper.  Hannah Eden was selected for the Best Criminal Justice and Education Paper.  Marshall Stevens (Men's Swimming) was awarded for the Best Literary Work, while Joshua Lynch (Cheerleading) was selected for the Best Musical Performance.
