Jones Propels Hawks To Comeback Win Against FMU

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team rallied from a double-digit deficit as Monique Jones scored 10 points in the final quarter to propel the Hawks to a 75-73 victory over Francis Marion in Conference Carolinas action on Tuesday evening.

Destiny Robinson registered her fifth straight double-double with 15 points and a season-high 18 rebounds.  Monique Jones scored 10 of her 13 points during the fourth quarter comeback.

Aniah Patterson tallied 13 points, while Tyaysia Sharpe chipped in with 11 points.

Chowan outscored Francis Marion 18-7 in the fourth quarter holding the Patriots to 17.6% (3-17) shooting in the frame.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

Chowan opened the contest on a 9-2 run as Monique Jones and Destiny Robinson started the scoring with a pair of layups.  Olivia Gaither knocked down a triple and Aniah Patterson posted a jumper.

The Patriots would rally with a 20-3 run as Aniah Patterson connected from the floor and Destiny Robinson tallied a point at the stripe.

Jahkeria Bagby ended the run with a jumper as Tyaysia Sharpe hit a floater.  FMU tallied the last five points of the quarter to lead 27-16.

Second Quarter:

FMU hit a three-pointer before Keibra Hopkins sparked a run with a jumper.  Aniah Patterson added a bucket before Destiny Robinson tallied an old-fashioned three-point play.  Hopkins continued the run with a pair from the stripe to cut the deficit to 30-25.  Monique Jones added a point at the stripe before the Patriots ended the run with a layup.

The Patriots used offensive rebounds to push their advantage back to double-digits, 36-26, before Destiny Robinson added a putback bucket.  FMU countered with another run as Olivia Gaither posted a layup.  Robinson posted a pair from the stripe to cut the deficit to 42-32.

Keibra Hopkins notched a layup before Tyaysia Sharpe knocked down a triple.  Hopkins added a layup to cut the deficit 45-39.  Demetria Bland added a point and Destiny Robinson picked up a pair at the charity stripe to trail 45-42 at the half.

Third Quarter:

Destiny Robinson opened up the scoring in the half with a putback layup.  Aniah Patterson tallied a putback layup to cut the deficit to 47-46.  Patterson connected from the stripe before Francis Marion answered with a pair of three-pointers.  Tyaysia Sharpe knocked down a triple to cut the deficit to 55-51.

Olivia Gaither tallied a jumper before Aniah Patterson connected from deep to even the score at 56-all.  FMU went on a 5-0 run before Keibra Hopkins tallied a point at the stripe.

The Patriots led 66-57 at the end of the frame.

Fourth Quarter:

Monique Jones scored a layup to post the first basket in the period.  Keibra Hopkins added a driving layup.  Destiny Robinson picked up a point at the stripe to cut the deficit to six, 68-62.  Jones added a pair of baskets to trim the deficit in half, 69-66.

Monique Jones' run continued with a pull-up jumper and layup to close the gap to one possession, 71-70.  Tyaysia Sharpe handed the Hawks the lead with 1:55 remaining with a three-pointer.

Destiny Robinson collected a rebound to force the Patriots to foul late in the period.  Demetria Bland tallied a pair at the stripe to push the advantage to 75-71 with 17 seconds remaining.

Chowan's defense held the Patriots scoreless for over four minutes until FMU scored with nine seconds remaining.  The Hawks would miss a pair at the stripe allowing the Patriots the opportunity to tie at the buzzer but came up empty.
