MURFREESBORO, N.C. – In a battle for third place in the Conference Carolinas standings, the Chowan Women's Basketball team couldn't combat the post presence from Belmont Abbey in a 77-67 loss on Friday evening.

Monique Jones paced the Hawks with 18 points and eight rebounds. Aniah Patterson chipped in with 12 points, while Destiny Robinson tallied 10 points, nine rebounds, and four blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter:
Chowan jumped out to an early 9-2 lead with a 9-0 run. Monique Jones started the run with a jumper followed by a pair of jumpers by Aniah Patterson and a three-pointer by Olivia Gaither.
Monique Jones added three points before Belmont Abbey evened the score at 12-all. Keibra Hopkins and Jahkeria Bagby knocked down a jumper to keep pace with the Crusaders.
Demetria Bland connected from deep before Belmont Abbey scored the final five points of the period to lead 24-19.
Second Quarter:
The Crusaders added four more points to their lead and held the Hawks scoreless for the opening 3:20 of the period before Shequana Jackson tallied a putback bucket. Tyayasia Sharpe knocked down a three pointer to cut the deficit to 30-24.
A 6-0 run by the Crusaders would be countered by a 7-0 run for the Hawks. Destiny Robinson started the run with a basket before Monique Jones finished off the old-fashioned three-point play. Jahkeria Bagby added a jumper to end the run.
Shequana Jackson tallied a layup in the final minute of the half as Belmont Abbey led 42-33 at the intermission.
Third Quarter:
Monique Jones started the scoring for the Hawks in the half with a pair from the stripe before Aniah Patterson and Shequana Jackson connected from the floor.
Belmont Abbey went on a 10-2 run to increase their lead to 57-41 as Keibra Hopkins connected from the floor for the lone tally. Monique Jones ended the run with a jumper. Destiny Robinson tallied a pair of buckets to end the quarter as the Crusaders led 64-47.
Fourth Quarter:
After an early basket by Monique Jones, the Crusaders pushed their lead to 68-49 before Tyaysia Sharpe added a jumper and Aniah Patterson knocked down a triple. Destiny Robinson picked up a pair at the stripe before Patterson completed the three-point play to spark a run.
Keibra Hopkins and Destiny Robinson scored in transition off turnovers along with a jumper by Monique Jones to cut the deficit to single-digits, 73-65.
Monique Jones finished off the scoring in the contest from the stripe.

Chowan wraps up their home slate in the regular season with Senior Day against Southern Wesleyan scheduled for Saturday, February 12. Tip-off is slated for 2pm with senior day festivities prior to tip-off.
