Hawks Defend Home Court, Sends Lions Packing, 76-71

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Men's Basketball team snapped a seven-game losing streak to Emmanuel while increasing their winning streak to five games in a 76-71 win over the Lions in Conference Carolinas action on Monday evening.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Chase Barnett paced the offense with a team-high 16 points.  Barnett added five assists and four steals.  Daylan Askew added 16 points and Jay Estime collected 13 points.

Isaac Hippolyte posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.  Skyler Davies added seven rebounds and five blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

Chase Barnett scored four points to spark the offense while Daylan Askew knocked down a triple to even the score early at 7-all.  RJ Wilson added a pair of baskets before Isaac Hippolyte tallied a pair from the stripe.  Barnett went coast-to-coast on a steal before Askew connected from deep again to give the Hawks an 18-16 advantage.

Jay Estime tallied five quick points to put the Hawks in front 23-18 before a 6-0 run by the Lions allowed them to regain the lead.  Skyler Davies hit a jumper in the paint before an elbow jumper by Veigar Alexandersson.  Preston Le Gassick collected a basket in transition to flip the lead back to the Hawks, 29-28.

Christian Koonce sparked a run to end the half with a layup as Emmanuel scored for the final time in the half at the 5:12 mark to lead 32-31.  Daylan Askew gave the lead back to the Hawks with a triple followed by a long distance shot by Chase Barnett.  Skyler Davies notched a jumper before Barnett and Askew ended the half with a basket each to lead 43-32 at the intermission.

Second Half:

Isaac Hippolyte traded baskets with Emmanuel to start the half before Jay Estime knocked down a trey.  The Lions went on a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to three, 52-49, as Christian Koonce hit a jumper during the offensive stall.  RJ Wilson ended the run with a pair from the stripe and Chase Barnett posted a layup in transition.

Out of the under-12 media timeout, Chase Barnett picked up four points at the line along with a triple by Daylan Askew to push the lead back to double-figures, 63-50.  Isaac Hippolyte and Christian Koonce continued the scoring with a basket each.  Askew connected from deep before a 9-2 run by the lions cut the deficit to six, 72-66.

Jay Estime picked up a pair from the stripe as Emmanuel would cut the deficit to three, 74-71, following a five-second in-bound call.  Daylan Askew added a pair from the stripe to extend the lead with 27 seconds remaining.

On the next possession, the Hawks fouled a three-point shooter, but survived as the Lions missed all three attempts.  Emmanuel missed their final three shots in the final 15 seconds as the Hawks turned the ball over twice in the waning seconds.

Chowan hits the road to take on rival, Barton, in Wilson on Wednesday, December 7.  Tip-off is slated for approximately 7:30pm.
