Hawks Leash Bulldogs Behind Patterson's Career Day

Robinson Breaks CU's DII Career Rebounding Record

BOWIE, MD. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team ended 2022 with a strong performance behind career days of Aniah Patterson and Destiny Robinson as the Hawks soared to an 87-75 victory over former league foe, Bowie State, on Saturday afternoon.

Aniah Patterson scored a career-high 26 points on 8-12 shooting to lead the Hawks.

Destiny Robinson collected her fifth double-double (19 points and 13 rebounds) of the season on her way to claiming the Chowan Division II career rebounding record.  Robinson secured her 710 career rebounding breaking the record formerly held by Jordan Payne (709, 2014-17).  Robinson added four assists and four blocks.

Demetria Bland added 12 points and five assists.  Keibra Hopkins tallied five points, eight rebounds and three assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

Destiny Robinson started off the scoring with a layup before Aniah Patterson went 1-2 from the stripe.  Bowie State rallied with a quick 5-0 run before Robinson added another layup to cut the deficit to 7-5.  Jayah King-Johnson collected a layup before Sydney Roberts picked the Bulldogs' pocket and scored during the press.

Imani Hickman added a pair from the stripe as Bowie State led 16-11.  Aniah Patterson connected from deep on back-to-back possessions to take a 17-16 lead.  Patterson continued her scoring output with a layup as the Hawks trailed 22-19 at the end of the frame.

Second Quarter:

Destiny Robinson scored the first six points of the frame with a pair from the stripe and a pair of layups to hand the lead to the Hawks, 25-24.  Demetria Bland connected from deep to add to the run before Keibra Hopkins and Aniah Patterson connected from the floor, 32-28.

Bowie State rallied to even the score, 32-all, before Demetria Bland ended the scoreless draught with a jumper.  Keibra Hopkins added a layup along with another jumper by Bland to increase the lead to 38-32 before the end of the half.

Third Quarter:

After ending the half on a 6-0 run, the Hawks continued the run as Destiny Robinson scored four baskets along with free throws by Robinson and Aniah Patterson to push the advantage to 49-35.  Patterson knocked down a triple before Bowie State ended a four minute stretch without a field goal.

Jayah King-Johnson collected a putback basket before Aniah Patterson scored a three-point play off a turnover.  Patterson knocked down a triple to increase the advantage to 60-43.  Demetria Bland tallied a pair from the stripe prior to a putback layup by Imani Hickman.

Keibra Hopkins added a free throw before a layup by Imani Hickman to push the lead to 67-51.  Aniah Patterson picked up a pair from the stripe before the end of the stanza.

Fourth Quarter:

Demetria Bland knocked down a triple to start the frame to push the lead to 72-53.  Bowie State countered with a 6-0 run before Aniah Patterson knocked down a jumper.  Imani Hickman added a layup before Jayah King-Johnson collected a layup following a record breaking rebound by Destiny Robinson.

After a quick run by the Bulldogs, Jayah King-Johnson ended the run with a layup.  Tyaysia Sharpe picked up a pair from the charity stripe.  Kashara Simpson picked up a free throw before Sharpe notched a layup.

Bowie State picked up points at the charity stripe.  Sydney Roberts cashed in on a pair from the stripe to end the scoring.

UP NEXT

Chowan will start the New Year on the road in a Conference Carolinas contest against North Greenville on January 4 in Tigerville, S.C.  Tip-off is slated for 5pm.
