Chowan Rallies From Double-Digits To Defeat Cougars

AMERICUS, GA. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team shot 70% in the fourth quarter to overcome a double-digit halftime deficit to earn the first victory of the season in the opener against Columbus State on Friday afternoon.

Aniah Patterson led the team with 19 points.  Yasmine Brown tallied 11 points, while Imani Hickman and Tyaysia Sharpe posted eight points each.  Sharpe added seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals.

Destiny Robinson led the team with 11 rebounds and six blocks to go with seven points.  The Hawks would out-rebound the Cougars, 55-45.

Columbus State appeared in the NCAA Division II National Tournament in 2021-2022.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

Chowan missed their first three shots of the contest until Keibra Hopkins posted a layup in transition.  Imani Hickman picked up a point at the stripe before Reagan Wilson connected from deep to even the score at 6-all.

Aniah Patterson and Destiny Robinson kept pace with Columbus State to exchange baskets.  Yasmine Brown collected a bucket as the Cougars led 17-12 at the end of the opening quarter.

Second Quarter:

Aniah Patterson opened the scoring in the frame with a jumper before Yasmine Brown added a layup and Patterson connected from deep as the Cougars started to pull away a bit, 25-19, midway through the quarter.

Columbus State pushed their advantage to 30-19 before Imani Hickman added a layup.  Aniah Patterson hit a jumper and Tyaysia Sharpe added a pair of free throws to trim the deficit back to single-digits.  Patterson hit a three pointer to close out the half to trail 38-28.

Third Quarter:

Tyaysia Sharpe scored the first four points in the half for the Hawks as Demetria Bland swiped the ball and took it coast-to-coast for the layup to spark a run.  Imani Hickman collected a pair of baskets before a triple by Yasmine Brown cut the deficit to one, 42-41, with 4:51 remaining in the quarter.

Columbus State pushed their advantage to two possessions before Reagan Wilson knocked down a triple and Destiny Robinson added a layup to trail 50-47 at the end of the frame.

Fourth Quarter:

To open the quarter, Aniah Patterson knocked down a three-pointer to even the score, but the Cougars answered on their possession.  Destiny Robinson picked up a pair at the stripe before the Cougars hit a three-pointer to offset the scoring.  Yasmine Brown added a bucket before a pair of layups by Patterson closed the gap to 59-58 with 4:04 remaining.

Reagan Wilson posted the next three points along with a jumper by Yasmine Brown kept the Hawks within striking distance trailing 64-63.  After a 1-2 effort at the stripe by the Cougars, Keibra Hopkins hit a jumper following a steal by Tyaysia Sharpe to knot the score at 65-all with less than a minute to play.  Destiny Robinson would corral the missed shot and pick up a point at the stripe to take the lead.  Another missed shot by the Cougars allowed Tyaysia Sharpe the pair at the stripe to push the lead to 68-65.  Columbus State picked up a point at the stripe down the stretch but could not send the game to overtime.

Chowan has a short turnaround as the Hawks will take on Georgia Southwestern on Saturday, November 12 at 2pm in the Conference Challenge.
