FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA. – Late free throws by Young Harris handed the Chowan Men's Basketball team a 90-86 back-and-forth loss in the season opener on the road on Friday evening.

Christian Koonce and Jay Estime paced the Hawks with 21 points each. Daylan Askew and Isaac Hippolyte contributed 10 points each.
Young Harris went to the free throw line 20 times in the first half, while converting 27-34 in the contest. The Mountain Lions went on a 10-2 run in the final 4:29.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half:
Isaac Hippolyte opened up the scoring with a layup before Daylan Askew connected from deep and Chase Barnett picked up a point at the stripe to lead 6-3 early. Young Harris used a quick 7-0 run to take a 10-6 advantage before Christian Koonce ended the run with a triple and sparked a run for the Hawks. Daylan Askew would intercept a skip pass and record a dunk on the other end to hand the lead back to the Hawks, 11-10. Koonce and Barnett added a layup in transition to lead 15-10 and force a timeout by the Mountain Lions.
RJ Wilson continued the momentum for Chowan with a corner three followed by a long two-pointer by Jay Estime to lead 20-13. YHC countered with a 9-0 run to regain the lead 22-20 before Wilson and Estime knocked down a triple to end the run.
Chase Barnett collected a pair at the stripe before Christian Koonce added a layup. Koonce picked up another point at the stripe. Young Harris stayed close getting to the free throw line to lead 34-31 with just over five minutes remaining in the half.
Christian Koonce added a pair from the stripe before Jay Estime hit a deep two to cut the deficit to 37-35. Koonce posted a pair of layups to give the lead back to the Hawks, 39-38. Isaac Hippolyte tallied a turn-around jumper and a dunk in transition before Chase Barnett added a floater.
The Hawks and Mountain Lions went into the intermission knotted up at 45-all.
Second Half:
Jay Estime put the Hawks on the board in the second frame with a corner trey followed by a three-pointer by Christian Koonce. Isaac Hippolyte recorded a put-back basket along with a pull-up jumper by Daylan Askew to keep the score knotted up at 55-all.
Skyler Davies posted his first points in a Chowan uniform on a back door dunk and a three-pointer to give the Hawks a 60-55 advantage. YHC would counter with a 7-0 run before Daylan Askew and Jay Estime connected from deep to end the run.
Cheick Traore tallied a layup before RJ Wilson knocked down a triple to put the Hawks up 71-66. Jay Estime connected from deep on back-to-back possessions prior to the Mountain Lions trimming the deficit to two, 77-75.
Christian Koonce continued to propel the Hawks forward with a jumper and a pair of freebies. After a triple by YHC, Isaac Hippolyte added a pair from the stripe to offset the free throws by the Mountain Lions. Chase Barnett picked up a point at the line as YHC evened the score at 84-all with 3:27 remaining.
Jay Estime would put the Hawks on top, 86-85, with 1:30 remaining with a pull up jumper from the baseline. The Mountain Lions took advantage of late free throws to pull ahead 88-86 with 28.4 remaining. On the next possession for the Hawks, the shot would be blocked forcing the Hawks to foul.
YHC pushed their lead to 90-86 with 8.9 remaining at the charity stripe.
