Chowan Grounded By Fleet On The Road

DUE WEST, S.C. – The Chowan Volleyball team dropped their fifth straight match in a 3-0 loss to Erskine in the final road game of the season in league action on Saturday afternoon.

Ellie Middleton and Anixa Rosa-Martinez collected 10 kills each.  Middleton added a double-double with 10 digs.  Chloe Putnam and Nia Baskin tallied four kills each.

Diana Rodriguez added 31 digs and is 20 digs shy of the single-season record.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Madison Hall put the Hawks on the board with a block before Anixa Rosa-Martinez collected a kill.  Erskine pushed their lead to 11-5 before Ellie Middleton and Nia Baskin added a kill to close the gap to 12-7.  The Fleet stretched the advantage to 16-7 before a kill by Rosa-Martinez and Hall along with a service ace by Middleton trimmed the deficit to 16-11.  Erskine pushed their lead out again, 22-11, before another run by the Hawks.  Baskin and Rosa-Martinez collected a kill before Rosa-Martinez and Middleton tallied a kill before the end of the set, 25-18.

Ellie Middleton opened the second set with a kill along with a block by Nia Baskin and Anixa Rosa-Martinez.  Madison Hall and Rosa-Martinez added a kill to put the Hawks up 7-5.  Erskine secured seven of the next eight points to take a 12-8 lead.  Middleton slowed the run with a kill prior to the Fleet leading 19-10.  Rosa-Martinez and Chloe Putnam closed the gap to 21-17 with a pair of kills to force a timeout.  Middleton finished off the set with three kills as Erskine took the set 25-21.

In the third set, Ellie Middleton notched a kill to start the scoring followed by a block by Nia Baskin.  Baskin added a kill along with a kill by Anixa Rosa-Martinez to put the Hawks up 6-3.  Kills by Chloe Putnam, Ellie Middleton, and Hadley Prince kept the Hawks in front, 12-11.  Erskine went on a 9-3 run to lead 21-15 as Madison Hall and Rosa-Martinez notched a kill.  Putnam and Middleton notched a kill before the end of the match.

UP NEXT

Chowan returns home for their final match of the regular season as the Hawks host Francis Marion on November 1.  First serve is slated for 6pm.
