Chowan Tussles With West Division Leader Emmanuel

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA. – The Chowan Volleyball team tussled with the West Division leader, Emmanuel, in Conference Carolinas action on Friday evening before falling in straight sets.

Anixa Rosa-Martinez led the offense with 13 kills.  Nyah Powers and Ellie Middleton added five kills each.  Diana Rodriguez added 21 digs, while Middleton posted 11.

Emmanuel posted 10.0 blocks while the Hawks collected 3.0 blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Alexa Woolson served up an ace to put the Hawks on the board as Emmanuel pushed their lead to 8-4 before Anixa Rosa-Martinez registered the first kill.  A kill by Madison Hall and Rosa-Martinez along with a pair of kills by Chloe Putnam put the Hawks up 11-8 and forced a timeout by the Lions.  Emmanuel evened the score prior to kills by Rosa-Martinez, Nyah Powers and Putnam along with a service ace by Hadley Prince traded points.  Woolson posted an ace to put the Hawks up 19-17.  Diana Rodriguez posted a kill before the Lions finished off the set 25-20.

Emmanuel scored the opening two points of the second set before handing the Hawks three points on errors.  Ellie Middleton served up an ace along with a pair of kills by Anixa Rosa-Martinez put the Hawks up 6-3.  Diana Rodriguez added an ace prior to Emmanuel evening up the score at 7-all.  Rosa-Martinez and Nyah Powers registered a kill as a block by Nia Baskin and Madison Hall evened the score at 12-all.  Baskin and Hall posted a kill each as Emmanuel pushed their lead to 21-15.  Powers ended the run with a kill before Middleton and Baskin collected kills.  The Lions finished off the set 25-19.

Ellie Middleton and Anixa Rosa-Martinez opened up the third set with a kill.  Rosa-Martinez collected a pair of kills along with a kill by Haydon Ahlers as the Hawks led 6-4 early.  Chloe Putnam, Rosa-Martinez, Nyah Powers, and Middleton traded kills with the Lions to keep the score even, 11-all.  Ahlers collected a kill to spark a small rally as Rosa-Martinez added a kill along with an assisted block by Putnam and Ahlers put the Hawks up 16-13.  The Lions rallied to take the lead 20-17 as Rosa-Martinez notched a pair of kills.  Middleton posted a kill along with an assisted block with Nia Baskin to close the gap to 21-20.  Ahlers collected a kill as Emmanuel finished off the match.

UP NEXT

Chowan wraps up the road trip as the Hawks travel to Due West, S.C. to take on Erskine on Saturday, October 29.  First serve is slated for 2pm.
