Bobcats Spoil Chowan Volleyball's Senior Day

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Volleyball team saw their Senior Day spoiled by Lees-McRae in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday afternoon.

Anixa Rosa-Martinez led the Hawks with eight kills.  Ellie Middleton and Chloe Putnam tallied five kills each.  Putnam and Nyah Powers posted four total blocks.

Diana Rodriguez recorded 23 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Lees-McRae scored the first four points of the match until Nia Baskin registered a kill.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Chloe Putnam added a kill to close the gap to 6-4.  The Hawks closed the gap to 11-10 as Nyah Powers, Ellie Middleton and Rosa-Martinez added a kill along with a service ace by Alexa Woolson and an assisted block by Powers and Putnam.  Both teams traded points down the stretch as Powers and Putnam teamed up for a block to even the match at 23-all before the Bobcats took the set 25-23.

The second set featured a back-and-forth affair as LMC led 12-9.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez collected a pair of kills before Chloe Putnam notched a kill and a solo block to close the gap to 15-13.  Nyah Powers and Ellie Middleton continued to push the Hawks forward with a kill.  The Bobcats pushed their lead to 22-16 before the Hawks rallied on a pair of blocks by Nia Baskin and Rosa-Martinez.  Madison Hall added the final kill before LMC took the set 25-21.

Chowan jumped out to an early 7-3 lead in the third set as Anixa Rosa-Martinez sparked a run with a kill.  Chloe Putnam added a kill along with a block with Nyah Powers.  Sydney Ginaitt posted a service ace for the lead.  The Hawks stretched their lead to 13-8 as Nia Baskin and Kolleen Priest teamed up for a block along with a pair of kills by Priest.  LMC scored seven of the next eight points to take a 16-15 lead.  Rosa-Martinez added a kill before the lead moved to 20-16.  Nyah Powers notched a kill before Putnam and Baskin collected a kill to close the gap to 23-21.  The Bobcats would finish off the match with a 25-21 set victory.

Chowan hits the road for the next three matches as the Hawks travel to Mount Olive to take on the Trojans on Tuesday, October 25.
