Hawks Claw Back Twice, Streak Snapped Against Lions

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA. –  The Chowan Women's Basketball team saw their winning streak snapped as the Hawks rallied back from a 21 point deficit to take a one point lead but couldn't get the final shot to fall in an 82-81 setback against Emmanuel on the road in Conference Carolinas action on Thursday.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Demetria Bland and Aniah Patterson tallied 20 points each shooting 50% from the floor.  Bland posted five rebounds and five steals, while Patterson recorded seven rebounds and two steals.

Olivia Gaither chipped in with 17 points and nine rebounds.

Chowan rallied back from a pair of 21 point deficits with 5:08 remaining in the second quarter to cut the deficit to eight and again in the third quarter.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

Emmanuel opened up the contest on a 12-3 run as Brianna Copeland posted the first basket for the Hawks.  Monique Jones added a free throw before the Hawks called a timeout.

Out of the timeout, Keibra Hopkins and Demetria Bland connected from deep to cut the deficit to 12-9.   The Lions answered with a 12-0 run to push the deficit to 24-9.

Demetria Bland slowed the run with a driving layup and the free throw before the Lions countered with a layup at the other end, 26-12.  Aniah Patterson picked up a pair at the stripe as the Hawks trailed 28-14.

Second Quarter:

Olivia Gaither opened up the scoring in the period with a three-pointer in transition.  The Lions would score five points quickly to push the deficit to 33-17.  Gaither picked up a pair at the stripe prior to the Lions answering with a 7-0 run to lead 40-19.

Jahkeria Bagby ended the run with a layup to spark a run for the Hawks as Aniah Patterson added a layup and Bagby tallied another basket.  Demetria Bland connected from deep to continue the run along with a pair from Patterson at the line to cut the deficit to 40-30.

Keibra Hopkins posted a layup in transition to cut the deficit to single-digits.  The Lions connected from deep to slow the run.  Destiny Robinson scored a turnaround jumper in the paint to trail 43-34 at the intermission.

Third Quarter:

Emmanuel opened up the half on a 12-4 run to push their advantage back to double-digits.  Aniah Patterson knocked down a pull up jumper to put the Hawks on the board.  Demetria Bland tallied a jumper swapping points with the Lions, 54-38.

Aniah Patterson connected from deep and Olivia Gaither added a putback layup as the Lions continued to answer at the other end.  Gaither posted a midrange jumper before the Lions picked up points at the free throw stripe from the bonus, 66-45.

Olivia Gaither knocked down a triple before Aniah Patterson tallied a layup before a technical foul was called to slow the run.  Gaither knocked down another triple before Patterson picked up a point at the stripe and Demetria Bland tallied a layup after the full-court pressure to cut the deficit to 67-56.

Olivia Gaither tallied a putback bucket before Demetria Bland continued the run with a layup in transition after picking up a steal off the inbound to cut the deficit to 67-60.

Aniah Patterson knocked down a jumper from the elbow at the buzzer to trail 67-62 heading into the final stanza.

Fourth Quarter:

Emmanuel tallied the opening basket of the frame before Aniah Patterson knocked down a jumper to answer.  Demetria Bland would answer a Lions' basket with a putback layup to maintain the five point deficit, 71-66.

After a three-pointer by Emmanuel, Monique Jones tallied a jumper along with an old-fashioned three-point play by Tyaysia Sharpe, 74-71, with 4:55 remaining.  The Lions posted the next four points before Tyaysia Sharpe knocked down a three-pointer to cut the deficit to four, 78-74.

Demetria Bland picked up a steal and collected a point at the stripe before Keibra Hopkins closed the gap to one with a layup following a steal.

The Lions went 1-4 from the stripe before Aniah Patterson knotted up the score with a layup with 42 seconds remaining.  Emmanuel regained the lead going 1-2 from the stripe but Demetria Bland tallied a layup with 23 seconds remaining.

Emmanuel answered with 12.7 seconds remaining to lead 82-81.  The final possession for the Hawks would rim out at the buzzer.

UP NEXT

Chowan will look to rebound on Saturday, January 29 as the Hawks host Lees-McRae in a Conference Carolinas clash.  Tip-off is slated for 2pm.
