Hawks Bounce Back With Win Over Bobcats

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team posted four players in double-figures and two with near triple-doubles to hold off Lees-McRae to get back in the win column in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Ten conference wins are the most the Hawks have posted in Conference Carolinas and tied for the most since 2015-16 and 2016-17 finishing both seasons with 10 league wins.

Destiny Robinson posted a season-high 21 points to go with 11 rebounds and eight blocks.  Demetria Bland also stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists.

Aniah Patterson chipped in with 14 points, while Keibra Hopkins scored 10 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

Lees-McRae raced out to a 13-4 advantage midway through the opening stanza with a 9-0 run after Aniah Patterson and Olivia Gaither knocked down a basket each to level the game at 4-all early.

Chowan would counter with a 7-2 run as Demetria Bland connected from deep to end the run.  Destiny Robinson added a jumper along with a pair of free throws by Keibra Hopkins closed the gap to 15-11.

Lees-McRae would take a 17-11 advantage into the quarter break.

Second Quarter:

Chowan opened the period on a 15-0 run to take the lead 26-17.  Destiny Robinson started the run with an old-fashioned three-point play followed by another layup.  Aniah Patterson and Olivia Gaither knocked down a triple before Demetria Bland connected for a pair at the stripe.  Keibra Hopkins had the final basket during the run.

LMC countered with a 12-3 run to regain the lead 30-29 as Monique Jones produced the and-one finish.  Destiny Robinson handed the lead back to the Hawks with a pair at the stripe before Aniah Patterson knocked down a jumper in the paint.

Demetria Bland sent the Hawks into the locker room with a 36-30 lead with a three-pointer with less than a minute to play in the half.

Third Quarter:

Demetria Bland opened up the half the same way she finished the half with a three-pointer.  Destiny Robinson and Aniah Patterson scored in the paint to push the lead to double-figures, 43-32.

Following a free throw by the Bobcats, the Hawks scored the next eight points to lead 51-33 as Destiny Robinson scored six points and Keibra Hopkins recorded a jumper.

LMC drew closer with a 12-3 run to close the quarter to cut the deficit to single-digits, 54-45.

Fourth Quarter:

Destiny Robinson and Keibra Hopkins traded points with the Bobcats to maintain the advantage.  Robinson and Aniah Patterson added a bucket to put the advantage at 13, 64-51.

With 4:57 remaining, the Bobcats closed the gap to 11, 64-53, and would not get any closer as the Hawks picked up the remaining points at the stripe by Aniah Patterson and Orlanna Gooden.

Chowan is slated to make-up the contest against Mount Olive on Wednesday, February 2.  Tip-off is at 5pm.
