DUE WEST, S.C. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team fought off a pesky winless Erskine squad for a 48-43 victory in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday afternoon for their sixth straight victory.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
Chowan's defense held Erskine to the lowest point total of the season after allowing a season-low 15 points in the first half. Chowan was held to a season-low 48 points including four points in the fourth quarter.
The win accounts for the longest winning streak since the 2017-18 season when the Hawks won seven straight (Nov. 24-Dec. 18, 2017).
Aniah Patterson and Olivia Gaither led the charge with 10 points each. Destiny Robinson and Tyaysia Sharpe chipped in with seven points each. Robinson collected nine rebounds to pace the defense.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter:
Olivia Gaither started the scoring in the slow moving opening frame. Monique Jones added a jumper and a pair of free throws before Aniah Patterson tallied a jumper to lead 8-4 early.
Erskine would go on a small run over the next four minutes to take a 9-8 advantage before going scoreless the final four minutes of the period.
Aniah Patterson knocked down a triple to end the run to regain the lead. Keibra Hopkins added a point from the charity stripe before Destiny Robinson added a putback layup to lead 14-9 at the end of the period.
Second Quarter:
The Chowan defense continued to hold the Fleet scoreless as Tyaysia Sharpe and Aniah Patterson connected from deep to open up the scoring in the period to push the advantage to double-figures, 20-9.
Neither team was able to score over the next three minutes until Emaree Hinton added a layup. The stifling defense continued for the Hawks
The Chowan defense held Erskine scoreless for over 11 minutes as Olivia Gaither knocked down a triple. Erskine would record their first points in the period with a layup at the 2:51 mark.
Tyaysia Sharpe posted a putback layup before Aniah Patterson connected from the floor to lead 29-15 at the end of the half.
Third Quarter:
Erskine opened the half with four quick points before Olivia Gaither answered with a triple. Destiny Robinson collected a point at the stripe. Tyaysia Sharpe ended a three minute scoring drought with a jumper.
Keibra Hopkins connected from deep and Destiny Robinson added a pair of buckets to lead 42-21 as the Chowan defense continued to stifle the Fleet with a seven minute drought. Hopkins added a layup in transition before the Fleet ended their drought with a pair of three-pointers, 44-27.
Fourth Quarter:
Kashara Simpson posted the first points in the period for the Hawks with a trip to the free throw line. Erskine continued their run from the end of the third to cut the deficit to single-digits, 46-41, while holding the Hawks scoreless for five minutes.
Olivia Gaither ended the drought with a layup for the final basket for the Hawks.

Chowan will look for the season sweep against Lees-McRae as the Hawks are scheduled to host the Bobcats on Saturday, January 29. Tip-off is slated for 2pm.
