Hawks Win Fifth Straight Against Warriors

CENTRAL, S.C. – The regionally-ranked Chowan Women's Basketball team had to shake off the rust after a two week break against Southern Wesleyan in a 58-45 victory in Conference Carolinas action for the Hawks' fifth victory in a row.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Keibra Hopkins led the Hawks with a season-high 15 points on 6-9 shooting.  Destiny Robinson tallied 10 points and nine rebounds.

Aniah Patterson and Tyaysia Sharpe chipped in with eight points each.

Chowan held Southern Wesleyan to 27.4% shooting as the Hawks committed 22 turnovers.

The Hawks moved to third in the league standings behind Mount Olive (9-0) and Barton (8-1).

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

After the opening basket by Southern Wesleyan, Olivia Gaither knocked down a triple to spark a rally for the Hawks.  Monique Jones and Aniah Patterson added a bucket to lead 7-2.

SWU connected from deep prior to Destiny Robinson scoring a layup in the post.  Robinson and Keibra Hopkins added a basket to push the lead to 13-5.  Jahkeria Bagby offset a Warrior's bucket with a layup.

Destiny Robinson ended a scoring drought with a jumper and a layup to lead 19-8 at the end of the quarter.

Second Quarter:

SWU opened the scoring in the period before Aniah Patterson answered with a pull up jumper from the elbow.

Chowan's shooting would go cold for the next three minutes before Tyaysia Sharpe connected from the floor.  Olivia Gaither added a jumper to push the advantage back to double-figures, 25-14.  Keibra Hopkins finished off the old-fashioned three-point play and added a layup in transition to lead 30-16.

Jahkeria Bagby picked up a point at the stripe before adding a layup on the next possession.  The Warriors scored the final four points of the half to trim the deficit to 33-22.

Third Quarter:

Destiny Robinson sparked a run to open up the second half with a driving layup.  Tyaysia Sharpe connected from deep at the end of the shot clock before Keibra Hopkins tallied a layup to push the advantage to 40-23.

SWU posted their first basket of the period with 3:38 remaining to end the run.  Aniah Patterson ended the scoring drought for the Hawks with a three-pointer.  Tyaysia Sharpe connected from deep to push the advantage to 46-26.  Emaree Hinton tallied a layup before the end of the period.

Fourth Quarter:

Keibra Hopkins connected from the charity stripe for the opening points of the quarter.  Aniah Patterson picked up a point at the stripe.  SWU countered with a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to 51-31.  Hopkins would end the threat with a putback layup.

Jahkeria Bagby tallied a point at the stripe before SWU posted the next four points.  Keibra Hopkins tallied a layup prior to the Warriors going on a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to 56-45.

Kandis Johnson picked up a pair at the stripe to finish off the scoring for the 58-45 victory.

Chowan continues the road swing as the Hawks take on Erskine on Saturday, January 22 in Due West, S.C. in a Conference Carolinas contest.  Tip-off is slated for 2pm.
