Faircloth Earns First Victory, Hawks Grind Out Split

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Chowan Volleyball team picked up their first win under head coach Vanessa Faircloth in a sweep in the final match of the Queens Fall Classic on Saturday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORES

Vanessa Faircloth recorded win number one at Chowan with the win over Young Harris.  In the first set, Ciara Ortega reached the 1,000 assist mark in her career, making her the fifth Division II Hawk to reach the milestone.

Anixa Rosa-Martinez led the Hawks with 20 kills with 11 coming in the win over Young Harris.  Katie Houston tallied nine against the Mountain Lions.  Anamarie Colon-Calero and Madison Hall tallied seven kills each against Wingate.

Ciara Ortega posted 40 assists on the afternoon.  The Hawks registered 11 service aces against YHC.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Chowan 1, #22 Wingate 3

After a Madison Hall kill, Wingate rallied to lead 7-1 before Anixa Rosa-Martinez notched a kill and Katie Houston posted an ace.  Rosa-Martinez recorded another kill as the Hawks trimmed the deficit to 8-7.

Kills by Chloe Putnam and Madison Hall kept the set close.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez posted two kills along with a kill by Anamarie Colon-Calero closed the gap to 20-17.

Chloe Putnam, Nyah Powers, Madison Hall, and Anixa Rosa-Martinez registered a kill each before Wingate took the opening set 25-22.

In the second set, Ellie Middleton, Ciara Ortega, and Chloe Putnam put the Hawks up 5-2 with kills.  Anamarie Colon-Calero sparked a 5-0 run with a pair of kills to lead 18-10.

Hadley Prince notched a kill to hold off the Bulldogs before Ciara Ortega posted an ace along with Ellie Middleton finishing off the set with a kill, 25-19.

Wingate used an 8-2 run in the third set to provide momentum.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez posted three kills as Wingate raced to a 25-16 set win.

Both teams swapped points in the early portion of the fourth set.  Madison Hall and Anixa-Rosa Martinez notched a pair of kills to keep the score even.  Anamarie Colon-Calero and Nyah Powers gave the Hawks an 18-17 advantage.

Wingate battled back before a kill by Madison Hall evened the match at 23-all.  Wingate would power through for the final two points of the set and match.

Chowan 3, Young Harris 0

Chowan dominated the opening set of the match leading 18-5.  Ciara Ortega started the set off with an ace followed by a kill by Anixa Rosa-Martinez.  Rosa-Martinez added two more kills along with one by Anamarie Colon-Calero and three aces by Hadley Prince to continue the run.

Chloe Putnam aided the run with a pair of kills along with a pair of aces by Anamarie Colon-Calero.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez added two kills along with one by Ellie Middleton stretched the lead to 22-8.

Ciara Ortega and Katie Houston posted a kill to finish off the set, 25-8.

Madison Hall and Katie Houston started off the second set with a kill each before a block by Anamarie Colon-Calero and a kill by Ellie Middleton pushed the Hawks out front 7-5.

A pair of kills by Anixa Rosa-Martinez sparked an 8-0 run for the Hawks that was capped off by a Madison Hall kill to lead 16-9.

Katie Houston registered three kills along with a kill each by Anamarie Colon-Calero, Nyah Powers and Chloe Putnam to finish off the set, 25-16.

The Hawks started slow in the third set as Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Katie Houston posted a kill to even the score at 3-all.

Hadley Prince started a rally to push the Hawks up to 6-3 with an ace.  Katie Houston tallied two kills during the run.  Anamarie Colon-Calero pushed the lead to 15-7 with a pair of kills and an ace.

Young Harris rallied to close the gap to 15-14 with a 7-0 run. Chloe Putnam and Anixa Rosa-Martinez notched a kill each to keep the Hawks in front, 19-15.

The Mountain Lions rallied once again to even the score at 20-all before Anixa Rosa-Martinez's kill and a block by Chloe Putnam put the Hawks up 23-20.  Katie Houston finished off the set and match with a kill.

UP NEXT

Chowan hits the road, this time to West Virginia as the Hawks compete in the Golden Eagle Invitational at the University of Charleston next weekend.
