CHARLESTON, W.VA. – The Chowan Volleyball team split the opening day of the Golden Eagle Invitational on Friday. The Hawks picked up the win against Indiana (Pa.) before falling in a battle against Ohio Dominican.

Anixa Rosa-Martinez paced the Hawks with 22 kills and eight service aces. Madison Hall recorded 15 kills, while Katie Houston notched 14 kills. Hall posted three total blocks.
Ciara Ortega posted 42 assists on the day, while Natalia Vega-Aponte led the team with 27 digs. Hadley Prince recorded four aces.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Chowan 3, Indiana (Pa.) 2
Chowan notched double-digit kills in three of the five sets including 15 in the opening two sets. Anixa Rosa-Martinez (16) and Madison Hall (10) notched double-digit kills.
Both sides exchanged points early as IUP led 13-8. The Hawks rallied with a six point run to take a 14-13 advantage. Ciara Ortega served up a pair of aces along with a kill and block by Madison Hall.
Anixa Rosa-Martinez helped the Hawks rally back to even the score at 23-all with a kill. Chloe Putnam, Ciara Ortega and Ellie Middleton recorded a trio-block before Middleton served up an ace to cap off the set 28-26.
Hadley Prince recorded a pair of aces in the middle of the second set to put some distance in the score 15-11. Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Anamarie Colon-Calero posted a kill before Katie Houston's kill put the Hawks up 18-13.
Chloe Putnam, Anixa Rosa-Martinez, Anamarie Colon-Calero, and Ellie Middleton recorded a kill to finish off the set 25-20.
The Hawks started off the set strong with a 5-0 run with Hadley Prince serving. Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Katie Houston registered a kill each.
IUP mustered a rally to take the lead 13-12 before using a 9-2 run to extend their lead to 22-15. Chloe Putnam and Anixa Rosa-Martinez posted a pair of kills each to close the gap before suffering a 25-21 set loss.
After staying close to start the fourth set, IUP opened up the score to 18-10 before finishing off the set 25-15.
In the decisive fifth set, Anamarie Colon-Calero posted a kill along with a kill by Anixa Rosa-Martinez. Rosa-Martinez posted an ace followed by a kill by Colon-Calero to lead 6-3.
Anamarie Colon-Calero halted the IUP run with a kill. IUP evened the score at 11-all before a kill by Anixa Rosa-Martinez swung the momentum. Madison Hall and Colon-Calero teamed up for a block before Rosa-Martinez and Colon-Calero notched the final block to take the match.
Chowan 0, Ohio Dominican 3
Chowan jumped out to an early 8-2 advantage as Anixa Rosa-Martinez posted two kills and two aces. Ellie Middleton registered a kill as both teams swapped points. Katie Houston posted a kill before the Panthers rattled off seven of the last eight points to take the set 25-18.
Madison Hall and Anamarie Colon-Calero posted kills along with an ace by Hadley Prince pushed the Hawks out to a 4-1 lead. Anixa Rosa-Martinez posted a kill and an ace. Rosa-Martinez notched a kill before ODU rallied to lead 13-11.
The Hawks, trailing 16-12, rallied to lead 20-16. Anixa Rosa-Martinez, Katie Houston, and Chloe Putnam registered kills during the run.
The Panthers countered with a 6-0 run before Katie Houston posted a kill to slow the run. ODU finished off the set 25-22.
Ohio Dominican used an 8-1 run to lead 16-9 after the set was even at 8-all. Madison Hall posted a kill to slow the run. The Panthers extended their score to 22-12 as Katie Houston and Madison Hall posted a kill before the end of the match.

Chowan wraps up the final day of the Golden Eagle Invitational on Saturday as the Hawks start the day with Winston-Salem State at 9:30am before finishing up at 3pm with the host Charleston.
