Hawks Handed A Pair Of Losses On Opening Day

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Chowan Volleyball team opened the season with a pair of losses on the opening day of the Queens Fall Classic on Friday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORES

Katie Houston led the team with 16 kills on the day including a double-double in the nightcap with 11 kills and 11 digs.

Madison Hall registered nine kills.  Natalia Vega-Aponte tallied 38 digs on the day with a season-high 20 digs against ECSU.  Ellie Middleton posted 31 digs on the day with a career-high 18 digs in the nightcap.

Anamarie Colon-Calero posted 5.0 blocks on the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Chowan 0, Queens 3

Madison Hall and Anixa Rosa-Martinez put the Hawks up 5-2 early before a 5-0 run by Queens moved the score to 7-5.

Katie Houston registered an ace before a block by Chloe Putnam and Anamarie Colon-Calero allowed the Hawks to take a 10-7 advantage.

Anixa Rosa-Martinez notched a kill followed by a Chloe Putnam kill ended the scoring for the Hawks as Queens went on a run to take the opening set 25-13.

In the second set, both teams swapped points as Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Katie Houston tallied a kill each.  The Royals went on an 8-1 run before Anamarie Colon-Calero slowed the run with a kill.

Chloe Putnam notched a kill as Queens took the second set 25-13.

In the final set, Haydon Ahlers tallied the first kill in the set as Queens raced out to a 10-5 lead.  Alondra Rivera-Miranda posted a kill along with a service ace by Hadley Prince closed the gap to 10-7.

Katie Houston posted three straight kills for the Hawks before a kill by Madison Hall and Anamarie Colon-Calero posted the final points for the Hawks.

Madison Hall started the scoring for the Hawks in the match with a kill.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Nyah Powers notched a kill as both teams continued to swap points.

Katie Houston sparked a 10-0 run with a kill as Ciara Ortega, Madison Hall, Houston and Hadley Prince notched a kill during the run to lead 20-10.

Anixa Rosa-Martinez finished off the set with a kill to take the opening set 25-12.

The second set featured both teams swapping points with Anixa Rosa-Martinez notching the opening kill for the Hawks.

Katie Houston tallied two kills as Elizabeth City State opened their advantage to 21-9.  Chowan rallied with a couple points as Anamarie Colon-Calero and Chloe Putnam notched a block before ECSU took the set 25-13.

Madison Hall, Anixa Rosa-Martinez, Katie Houston, and Chloe Putnam posted a kill each along with an ace by Ellie Middleton put the Hawks up 5-3 early.  Hall and Houston tallied another kill to keep the score even, 9-all.

ECSU would post a 9-1 run to stretch their advantage to 18-10 before Madison Hall and Anamarie Colon-Calero notched a block.

Anamarie Colon-Calero, Madison Hall, and Katie Houston gave the Hawks a boost to close the gap to 23-19.  ECSU would take the third set 25-21.

Attack errors hurt the Hawks in the final set as ECSU doubled up the Hawks 12-6.  Katie Houston notched a kill as ECSU expanded their lead to 21-12.

Anixa Rosa-Martinez, Ellie Middleton, and Katie Houston posted a kill to close the gap to 24-17 before ECSU took the set and match.

UP NEXT

Chowan wraps up the Queens Fall Classic with a pair of matches on Saturday, September 4.  The Hawks will take on nationally-ranked Wingate at 10am followed by Young Harris at 2:30pm.
