Chowan Volleyball Battles To Five Set Loss To Vikings

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – The Chowan Volleyball team battled to a five set defeat in the second meeting against Elizabeth City State in non-conference action on Thursday evening.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Anixa Rosa-Martinez posted a career-high 20 kills, the most for a Hawk since Nov. 2, 2016.  Rosa-Martinez also posted three service aces.

Katie Houston recorded 10 kills, while Chloe Putnam and Haydon Ahlers chipped in with six kills each.

Natalia Vega-Aponte led the defense with 24 digs, while Ellie Middleton posted 14 digs.  Anamarie Colon-Calero recorded three solo blocks and three assisted blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set:

Both teams traded points early in the set as Anixa Rosa-Martinez, Chloe Putnam, and Katie Houston recorded a kill to lead 6-4.

Anamarie Colon-Calero notched a kill along with a pair of blocks to push the lead to 13-7.  ECSU rallied to even the score at 13-all.

Madison Hall sparked a run with a kill along with a kill by Anamarie Colon-Calero and Chloe Putnam before an ace by Hadley Prince and a block by Putnam put the Hawks up 18-14.

With the score knotted up at 21-all, Anixa Rosa-Martinez posted two kills to finish off the set, 25-22.

Second Set:

Elizabeth City State raced out to an early 8-4 lead.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez posted three kills to close the gap to 12-10.

The Vikings pushed back to lead 16-11 before another Hawks' run with a kill by Katie Houston, Madison Hall, and Alondra Rivera-Miranda.  Natalia Vega-Aponte served up an ace to trim the deficit to 17-16.  Nyah Powers posted a kill to hand the lead to the Hawks, 18-17.

ECSU took the second set 25-23 to even the match.

Third Set:

Chowan raced out to a 7-3 advantage with a kill by Anixa Rosa-Martinez and a pair of aces by Rosa-Martinez.

The Hawks maintained their advantage with a run by Chloe Putnam and a pair of kills by Katie Houston to lead 18-11.

ECSU tried to make a run before Haydon Ahlers notched a pair of kills before finishing off the set with a kill, 25-18.

Fourth Set:

Neither side gave much advantage in the set separated by a couple points throughout the set.  Chloe Putnam and Haydon Ahlers posted a kill to hand the Hawks a slight lead 18-17 before an 8-2 run by the Vikings took the set 25-20.

Fifth Set:

Anixa Rosa-Martinez posted two kills and a kill by Katie Houston knotted up the score at 3-all early.

ECSU used four Hawk miscues to lead 9-5.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez tallied two kills as miscues mounted for the Hawks.  The Vikings took the fifth set 15-10.

Chowan opens Conference Carolinas action on Tuesday, September 21 as the Hawks host Mount Olive at 6pm.
