Chowan would jump out in front 17-7 at the half on touchdowns from Cade Cradlebaugh and Jaylon Boyd. Luis Orellana posted a 28 yard field goal for the double-digit lead at the half.
The Hawks would go up 24-7 after Laurence King hauled in a pass from Bryce Witt. Mars Hill proceeded to score 17 unanswered including the game-tying drive with 11 seconds to go.
Jaylon Boyd powered his way in for a 1-yd score in overtime before Raydarius Freeman sealed the victory with a pair of quarterback pressures forcing errant throws for the 30-24 victory.
Jaylon Boyd (Offensive Back of the Week) and Jalen Burton (Linebacker of the Week) earned CIAA Football Weekly honors.
HAWK HIGHLIGHTS
Chowan is 1-0 on the season for the first time since 2016. The win gave "second" year head coach Mark Hall his first win in his first official game as head coach.
Bryce Witt, senior quarterback, will look to continue to add to his impressive career numbers posting two touchdowns, now at 70. Witt made Imeek Watkins and Laurence King his favorite targets against Mars Hill as Watkins tallied 81 yards on four receptions and King posted six receptions for 77 yards and a touchdown.
Jaylon Boyd has big shoes to fill trying to become the third straight running back to post 1,000 yards rushing in a season. Boyd tallied 70 yards and two scores in the win.
Jalen Burton led the Hawks with 10 tackles, while Gilberto Ortiz and Basilio Fernandez tallied nine tackles each.
SCOUTING THE PIONEERS
Tusculum comes into the match up off a big win against St. Augustine's where the Pioneers rolled to a 58-14 win with over 500 yards of total offense. The Pioneers won the SAC Spring Championship and will look to continue that momentum.
The Pioneers used two quarterbacks in the win: Ivan Corbin, posted 190 yards and a touchdown, along with Tre Simmons tallied a passing and rushing touchdown. Justice Parham led the receiving corp with 98 yards and a touchdown.
Offensively, the Pioneers pounded the ball with 296 yards rushing. Craig Watts, transfer from Valdosta State, led Tusculum defensively with 17 tackles from his linebacker position.
