Hawks Baseball Grounded By Fleet

DUE WEST, S.C. –  The Chowan Baseball team appearing in their first action in nearly three weeks were unable to shake off the rust in time as the Hawks dropped the first two games of the series against Erskine on Thursday in league action.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORES

Tyler Jones and Tyler West led the Hawks with two hits each.  Noah Evington picked up a hit and two RBI, while Brock Cross recorded a home run in the second game.

Trenton Lee, Jeffrey Hiner, Ethan Whelan, Christian Allen, Justin Winslow, Ty Johnson, and Tristan Council picked up one hit each.  Council also had a RBI and two walks in the first game.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: Chowan 2, Erskine 14

Jeffrey Hiner picked up a two out single in the first inning before being left stranded.

Erskine used one hit and three free passes in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead.  The Fleet increased their lead in the second with three more runs on back-to-back doubles.

Tristan Council drew a walk and moved to second on a ground out before Tyler West reached on an infield single.  The Hawks would go down swinging to end the inning.

The Fleet added two more runs in the fourth inning on a home run to lead 8-0.

Chowan would get on the board in the fifth inning as Ethan Whelan singled up the middle to spark the rally.  Tristan Council drew a walk before both moved up a base on a wild pitch.  Ty Johnson hit a sacrifice fly to right to plate Whelan to close the gap to 8-1.

Erskine posted two runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 10-1.  The Fleet tacked on four more runs in the sixth as the lead moved to 14-1.

In the seventh, Trenton Lee led off the inning with a single to left.  Lane White produced a pinch hit walk before Lee scored on Tristan Council's RBI single to left field.

Game Two: Chowan 5, Erskine 21

Tyler Jones started the nightcap with a single in the second inning.  Jones moved to second on a ground ball before advancing to third on a wild pitch to be left stranded.

Erskine would score two runs in the second inning on a wild pitch and sacrifice fly to lead 2-0.

The Hawks would respond in the third inning as Christian Allen led off the inning with a walk.  Justin Winslow singled before an error allowed a run to score.  Noah Evington singled to left to plate a pair and give the Hawks a 3-2 advantage.  Tyler Jones picked up a single before a RBI ground out by Patrick Krack moved the score to 4-2.

The Fleet closed the gap in the third inning plating a run on three hits to trim the deficit to 4-3.  Erskine would even the score in the fourth inning on a pair of hits.

Ty Johnson led off the fifth with a walk before moving to third on a double down the left field line by Tyler West.  Patrick Krack loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch, but a pop up would end the threat.

Erskine strung four hits together to plate two runs to take a 6-4 advantage in the bottom half of the fifth.

Christian Allen and Ty Johnson picked up singles in the sixth inning but was left stranded.  The Fleet tacked on four runs to extend their lead to 10-4.

Erskine continued their scoring in the seventh inning plating eight runs on four hits and four free passes.

Brock Cross homered to left field in the eighth inning before the Fleet pushed across three more runs to extend their lead to 21-5.

Dallas Trevena drew a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch for the only action in the ninth inning.

UP NEXT

Chowan and Erskine wrap up the four game series on Friday, April 23 with first pitch of the doubleheader at 12pm.  The Hawks will partake in senior day along with the Fleet before the doubleheader.
