TIGERVILLE, S.C. – The Chowan Volleyball team opened the 2020-21 season with a five set loss to North Greenville on Friday evening in Conference Carolinas action.
The last meeting between these two teams, NGU took a 3-2 victory in 2019.

Katie Houston paced the Hawks with a career-high 11 kills. Houston played as the libero last season. Hannah Sladick tallied nine kills, nine digs and four assisted blocks. Anamarie Colon-Calero registered six kills and two assisted blocks.
Ciara Ortega notched 30 assists. Natalia Vega-Aponte registered 20 digs.
Chowan posted nine kills and 11 kills in the first and third sets, the sets the Hawks won.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set: Chowan 25, North Greenville 15
Katie Houston notched the first kill for the Hawks along with a kill by Hannah Sladick. Meghan Mutter tallied a service ace to even the score at 4-all early.
The Hawks would rattle off four straight points to lead 10-6. A kill by Anixa Rosa-Martinez, a pair of kills by Katie Houston, and a service ace by Rosa-Martinez posted the rally.
Anamarie Colon-Calero along with a block by Hannah Sladick and Katie Houston pushed the advantage to 13-8.
After a kill by Anixa Rosa-Martinez, the Hawks pushed the lead to 19-10 as Chowan had a service ace by Ciara Ortega, an assisted black by Hannah Sladick and Nyah Powers, finished off by Sladick's kill.
Two assisted blocks along with attacking errors allowed the Hawks to take the opening set.
Second Set: Chowan 14, North Greenville 25
Katie Houston tallied two kills and a kill by Nyah Powers was the only offense as NGU raced out front 13-4.
Anamarie Colon-Calero registered a kill before a kill by Hannah Sladick and Katie Houston saw the deficit move to 20-10.
NGU handed the Hawks points on errors before taking the set.
Third Set: Chowan 26, North Greenville 24
Ciara Ortega notched the opening kill for the Hawks in the set followed by a service ace by Meghan Mutter. Hannah Sladick and Katie Houston posted a kill as NGU led 15-10.
Hannah Sladick notched a kill and a service ace to keep pace. Back-to-back kills by Anamarie Colon-Calero closed the gap to 17-15. Sladick notched a kill before the Crusaders started handing the Hawks points to even the score at 24-all.
Katie Houston and Anamarie Colon-Calero ended the set with a kill each to take a 2-1 lead.
Fourth Set: Chowan 10, North Greenville 25
NGU opened the set on a 9-2 run as Hannah Sladick tallied the only kill. Saldick and Katie Houston posted a kill each as the deficit grew to 15-5.
Hannah Sladick and Nyah Powers posted a kill to wrap up the scoring for the Hawks in the set.
Fifth Set: Chowan 5, North Greenville 15
Nyah Powers opened the final set with a kill. Katie Houston notched a kill before four straight points by the Crusader increased the lead to 7-3. Powers registered the final kill for the Hawks.
