Chowan Suffers Heartbreak Against Barton

WILSON, N.C. – The Chowan Men's Lacrosse team suffered heartbreak in the revenge match against rival Barton in a non-conference meeting on Wednesday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Jaxon Martin and Eric George scored a hat-trick for the Hawks.  Jackson Downs posted one goal and one assist.  Alex Wildeboer and George tallied an assist.

Nathan Woodhill took the tough loss in cage with a career-high 18 saves.  Defensively, the Hawks forced four shot-clock violations.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Period:

The Hawks would get on the board midway through the period as Alex Wildeboer found Jaxon Martin for the opening tally.

Eric George would push the lead to 2-0 less than a minute later on an unassisted tally.

After several saves by Nathan Woodhill, Barton snuck one past the keeper to close the gap to 2-1 with 2:33 remaining.

Sullivan Prince found a cutting Jaxon Martin for a goal with seven seconds remaining in the period to lead 3-1.

Second Period:

Barton would even the score with two goal in the early portion of the period before taking a 4-3 lead midway through the period.

Nathan Woodhill and company kept the score at 4-3 before Eric George found Jackson Downs for the tally to head into the intermission knotted up at 4-all.

Third Period:

Barton would grab the momentum early in the period with a goal to lead 5-4.

Jaxon Martin and Jackson Downs posted shots on frame before Eric George scored an unassisted tally to even the score at 5-all with 6:42 remaining in the period.

Nathan Woodhill made two saves to close out the period.

Fourth Quarter:

Jaxon Martin gave the Hawks a 6-5 advantage scoring off an assist from Jackson Downs on the man-up advantage.

The Chowan defense continued to thwart the Barton offense stepping in front of shots and forcing shot clock violations.

With four seconds left on the shot clock, Eric George would five-hole the Barton keeper to put the Hawks up 7-5 with 7:48 remaining.

Barton closed the gap to 7-6 two minutes later.  The Chowan defense would continue to hold until the final minute.  Barton evened the match with 34 seconds remaining.

The final goal came after a deflected shot off the Chowan defender fell perfectly in the stick of a Barton attackman for the game-winning goal with 6.6 seconds remaining.

Chowan travels to Tigerville, S.C. to take on North Greenville in a Conference Carolinas contest on Saturday, March 27.
