Hawks Volleyball Tripped Up By Lees-McRae

BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Chowan Volleyball team fell to Lees-McRae in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Anixa Rosa-Martinez posted her first double-double of the season with 13 kills and 14 digs.  Hannah Sladick posted 11 kills along with nine kills from Anamarie Colon-Calero.

Ciara Ortega recorded 25 assists with seven digs, while Alondra Rivera-Miranda posted 17 assists and eight digs.

Natalia Vega-Aponte notched 21 digs, as Katie Houston posted 13 digs and six kills.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set: Chowan 22, Lees-McRae 25

Katie Houston and Anamarie Colon-Calero recorded a kill each to open the set.  Hannah Sladick tallied two kills to keep pace with Lees-McRae before the Bobcats went on a 6-2 run to lead 14-8.

Hannah Sladick tallied a kill during the spurt prior to Chloe Putnam's kill, service ace by Katie Houston and a kill by Anixa Rosa-Martinez closed the gap to 15-12.

Nyah Powers registered a kill before a service ace by Hannah Sladick cut the deficit to 19-17.

Anamarie Colon-Calero, Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Hannah Sladick posted a kill to keep the score within reach, 24-22, before the final point for the Bobcats.

Second Set: Chowan 25, Lees-McRae 19

Chowan opened the set on a 5-2 run as Anixa Rosa-Martinez sparked the run with three kills.  Natalia Vega-Aponte tallied a service ace before the Bobcats closed the gap to 7-6.

Anixa Rosa-Martinez recorded a service ace before a kill by Hannah Sladick and Nyah Powers countered the run.

LMC evened the score 13-all before Anixa Rosa-Martinez registered two kills and a kill by Hannah Sladick pushed the lead to 19-15.

Hannah Sladick and Anamarie Colon-Calero notched a kill along with a service ace by Ciara Ortega pushed the advantage to 23-17.  Anamarie Colon-Calero and Chloe Putnam finished off the set with a kill and assisted block.

Third Set: Chowan 19, Lees-McRae 25

After LMC led 3-0, Chowan countered with a 5-1 run as Anamarie Colon-Calero, Anixa Rosa-Martinez, and Chloe Putnam posted a kill.  Rosa-Martinez picked up two more kills as the score evened up at 7-all.

Hannah Sladick tallied a block and a pair of kills to even the score at 10.  Katie Houston posted a kill prior to a run by the Bobcats to lead 17-12.  Chloe Putnam ended the run with a kill.

Anamarie Colon-Calero and Hannah Sladick picked up points down the stretch before LMC took the set.

Fourth Set: Chowan 20, Lees-McRae 25

Chloe Putnam and Anamarie Colon-Calero started the scoring for the Hawks in the set with a kill.  Katie Houston notched a pair of kills as the Bobcats rallied to lead 11-7.

Ciara Ortega and Katie Houston posted a kill each to trim the deficit to 12-11, but the Bobcats trekked ahead 17-11.  Chloe Putnam posted a pair of kills along with a kill by Anixa Rosa-Martinez picked up a kill to cut the deficit to 17-15.

LMC pushed their advantage to 22-16 before Anixa Rosa-Martinez, Hannah Sladick, and Katie Houston recorded a kill by the end of the set.

The Hawks will travel to Mount Olive, N.C. to take on rival Mount Olive on Wednesday, March 24.  First serve is at 7pm.
