MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Volleyball team started strong before falling to Erskine in four sets in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday afternoon.

Ciara Ortega paced the Hawks in the contest with her third double-double of the season with 28 assists and a career-high 21 digs. Katie Houston notched her second double-double of the season with 10 kills and 20 digs.
Hannah Sladick chipped in with nine kills and two solo blocks, while Chloe Putnam tallied seven kills. Natalia Vega-Aponte recorded a team-high 26 digs.
Alondra Miranda-Rivera served up three aces.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set: Chowan 25, Erskine 8
Hannah Sladick tallied two kills along with a kill from Anamarie Colon-Calero and a block by Nyah Powers allowed the Hawks to lead 6-3 early.
Alondra Miranda-Rivera served the Hawks to the next 13 points recording three service aces and one kill, Katie Houston, as the Flying Fleet handed the Hawks points on errors, 20-4.
Katie Houston, Anamarie Colon-Calero, Hannah Sladick, and Chloe Putnam tallied a kill down the stretch to take the opening set 25-8.
Second Set: Chowan 20, Erskine 25
After leading 3-0 and grabbing one kill by Hannah Sladick, Erskine scored the next five points to lead 5-3.
Chloe Putnam tallied a kill along with a pair from Katie Houston and one by Anamarie Colon-Calero closed the gap to 10-8.
Chowan would rally to even the score at 14-all. Hannah Sladick and Chloe Putnam tallied a kill each during the stretch.
The Hawks would take the lead 19-17 as a stretch of kills forced an Erskine timeout. Chloe Putnam, Katie Houston, Nyah Powers and Hannah Sladick registered a kill.
Erskine finished off the set with eight of the next nine points for the victory.
Third Set: Chowan 9, Erskine 25
Hannah Sladick tallied three kills and Anamarie Colon-Calero posted one as the Fleet flew out to an 18-5 lead.
Chloe Putnam posted a kill before Erskine took the set 25-9.
Fourth Set: Chowan 20, Erskine 25
Katie Houston posted three kills along with a block by Chloe Putnam and Hannah Sladick gave the Hawks an early 8-6 advantage.
Chloe Putnam, Nyah Powers, and Katie Houston registered a kill each prior to Erskine going on a run to lead 15-12. Nyah Powers, Anamarie Colon-Calero, and Chloe Putnam posted a kill as the Hawks closed the gap to 20-19.
Erskine countered with five of the next six points to take the set and match.
UP NEXT
Chowan is scheduled to take a road trip to the mountains to face King and Lees-McRae next weekend. First serve is slated for 7pm on March 19 against King.
