CENTRAL, S.C. – The Chowan Softball bid for their first victory in league play came up short in the twinbill against Southern Wesleyan on Saturday.

Delaney Devor paced the Hawks at the plate with four hits, a double and two walks. Paige Wilhelm posted three hits with a triple and two RBI. Serena Riley and Mikayla Luskin tallied three hits with three RBI. Luskin posted a double and a home run.
Jesse Gentry posted three hits with a double and one RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One: Chowan 7, Southern Wesleyan 9
Serena Riley picked up a single to left to start the second inning. A fielding error allowed Riley to move to third and Kaitlin Brunelli to move over to second, the Hawks were unable to scratch across the opening run of the game.
Mikayla Luskin delivered the first blow in the contest with a solo homerun in the top of the third to lead 1-0.
Chowan would extend their lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning as Meredith Morgan posted an 11 pitch walk with one out. Kaitlin Brunelli doubled to left center before Paige Wilhelm emptied the bases with a triple to right center. Kelsey Sonntag produced a RBI groundout to score Wilhelm.
Southern Wesleyan rallied in the bottom half of the fourth inning with a four run frame on five hits.
The Hawks would regain the lead in the fifth inning as Mikayla Luskin doubled down the left field line to start the inning. Serena Riley doubled before an error allowed Riley to score on the Kaitlin Brunelli batted ball.
Chowan extended their lead to 7-4 in the sixth inning as Delaney Devor singled up the middle followed by an infield single by Hannah Eden. Jesse Gentry singled up the middle to score the pinch running Madison Dilday.
The Warriors used a late rally in the sixth to plate five runs off five hits to take the 9-7 victory.
Game Two: Chowan 9, Southern Wesleyan 11
SWU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two out single to left field.
Chowan responded with three runs in the second inning on four hits and an error. Meredith Morgan led off the inning with a bunt single. Kaitlin Brunelli singled to left before Paige Wilhelm reached on an error to load the bases. Delaney Devor singled to right to plate a run before Mikayla Luskin singled home a pair of runs to lead 3-1.
The Warriors chipped away at the deficit with a run in the second, but the Hawks tacked on two runs in the third. Serena Riley posted a walk before Meredith Morgan reached on an error. Hannah Naifeh doubled home the pair to lead 5-2.
SWU would not go away quietly scoring four runs off five hits in the third to lead 6-5. The Warriors would add three runs in the fourth inning and two in the fifth to lead 11-5.
Chowan's rally would come up short in the seventh as Paige Wilhelm drew a walk, stole second and came around to score on a passed ball. Delaney Devor and Hannah Eden doubled before Mikayla Luskin and Jesse Gentry were hit by pitches to load the bases. Serena Riley singled home Eden and Luskin to cut the deficit to 11-9. The Warriors were able to come up with the final out.
