Hawks Come Up Short In League Debut

TIGERVILLE, S.C. – In the Conference Carolinas debut, the Chowan Softball team dropped a pair on the road against North Greenville despite a late rally in the nightcap.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Delaney Devor, Jesse Gentry, and Meredith Morgan led the team with three hits each.  Gentry and Hannah Eden picked up a double.

Jesse Gentry and Mikayla Luskin tallied two RBI.

Megan Vincent took the loss in the nightcap striking out four.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: Chowan 3, North Greenville 10

Hannah Eden nearly put the Hawks on the board to lead off the contest as the ball hit off the fence for a stand-up double.  Eden would be left stranded at second.

NGU rallied in the bottom of the inning with a four run frame to lead 4-0.

Hannah Naifeh was hit by a pitch in the second inning.  NGU added three runs in the bottom of the third to lead 7-0.

Jesse Gentry and Paige Wilhelm picked up singles in the fourth inning but was unable to plate a run.

Delaney Devor singled to right field and swiped second in the fifth inning.  Mikayla Luskin and Jesse Gentry drew a pair of two-out walks before leaving the bases loaded.

In the sixth inning, Hannah Naifeh singled and Kelsey Sonntag was hit by a pitch with two outs.  Delaney Devor reached on an infield single to load the bases before Hannah Eden drew a walk to plate a run.  The two-out rally continued as Mikayla Luskin delivered a two RBI single to right field to cut the deficit to 7-3.

The Crusaders would answer with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to finish off the victory 10-3.

Game Two: Chowan 2, North Greenville 3

Meredith Morgan picked up a single in the second inning before North Greenville scored a run in the bottom half of the inning to lead 1-0.

Delaney Devor picked up a bunt single in the third and moved to second on a groundout before being left stranded.

In the fourth inning, Jesse Gentry led off the inning reaching on an error.  Meredith Morgan singled to left to put Gentry into scoring position with one out.  A fielder's choice and strikeout ended the threat.

The Hawks threatened again in the fifth inning as Hannah Eden produced a two out single to left center.  Mikayla Luskin reached on an error allowing Eden to move to third.  Jesse Gentry doubled to left center to even the score at 1-all.

NGU threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Megan Vincent pitched out of the bases loaded jam with a pair of groundouts to end the inning.

In the eighth, Mikayla Luskin started the inning on second and moved to third on a passed ball.  Jesse Gentry singled to left to score Luskin to lead 2-1.  A double play ball ended the rally.

The Crusaders moved the runner from second on a bunt single and scored on a fielder's choice.  A sacrifice fly allowed NGU to walk-off with the 3-2 victory.

Chowan continues their road swing with a doubleheader at Southern Wesleyan on Saturday.  First pitch is slated for 1pm.
