Hot Start Fuels Hawks Win Over Bobcats On Senior Day

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team wrapped up the regular season with a win after holding off Lees-McRae on Senior Night on Thursday evening.

Monique Jones recorded a double-double with 14 points and a career-high 18 rebounds.  Destiny Robinson and Aniah Patterson tallied 18 points each.  Robinson and Keibra Hopkins recorded nine rebounds each.  Demetria Bland tallied seven points and six assists.

Chowan picked up 36 points in the paint and tallied the 23-11 advantage in second chance points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

Chowan jumped out to a 14-3 lead over the opening five minutes of play including a 9-0 run to start the game.  Demetria Bland started the contest with a three-pointer followed by a pair of transition buckets by Keibra Hopkins.  Destiny Robinson scored a layup before Lees-McRae went 1-2 from the line for their first point in the game.

Aniah Patterson picked up a point at the line before back-to-back buckets by Destiny Robinson put the Hawks up 14-3.  Robinson added another bucket and Brianna Copeland knocked down a triple to push the lead to 19-9.

Demetria Bland and Destiny Robinson closed out the scoring to lead 24-15 at the end of the opening quarter.

Second Quarter:

After a Lees-McRae triple, Aniah Patterson answered with a three-pointer sparking a 10-1 run.  Keibra Hopkins connected from the floor before Patterson hit another trey and layup to lead 34-18.

Aniah Patterson posted a bucket along with a pair of free throws by Destiny Robinson and a layup by Keibra Hopkins saw the lead move to 41-25 at the intermission.

Third Quarter:

Lees-McRae took the momentum out of the locker room with an 11-2 run to cut the deficit to 43-36.  Emaree Hinton tallied two free throws during the spurt.

Monique Jones posted the first bucket for the Hawks in the half at the 5:36 mark along with a pair of freebies to push the lead to 48-36.  Kyani Moore added a bucket before Aniah Patterson and Jones connected from the floor.

Chowan would lead 57-45 going into the fourth quarter.

Fourth Quarter:

Monique Jones notched a bucket before the Hawks would go scoreless for a two minute period.  Destiny Robinson picked up a three at the stripe to maintain the double-digit lead.

LMC would go on a quick spurt to cut the deficit to 62-57 with 5:23 to play.  Demetria Bland would put some distance in the score with a pair from the stripe.  Destiny Robinson and Monique Jones recorded layups to push the lead to 68-59.

The Hawks would cap off the game on a 10-2 run for the win.  Aniah Patterson connected from deep before a pair of buckets by Kyani Moore and Monique Jones finishing off the scoring at the stripe.

UP NEXT

Chowan grabbed the seventh seed in the 2021 Conference Carolinas Women's Basketball Championship.  The Hawks will travel to Barton on Tuesday, March 2 for the First Round contest.
