DUE WEST, S.C. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team put their claws into Erskine to hold the Flying Fleet to 19.7% from the floor for the 65-44 victory in Conference Carolinas play on Saturday afternoon.

Aniah Patterson led the Hawks with 17 points on 7-11 shooting. Demetria Bland tallied 10 points and Brianna Copeland notched nine.
11 Hawks recorded at least one basket in the contest. Chowan held the Fleet to 19.7% (12-61) shooting from the floor. Erskine went 15-31 from the stripe.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter:
Monique Jones put the Hawks on the board first as both teams struggled from the floor early. Emaree Hinton tallied a layup before Erskine took a 7-4 lead with a three-pointer and a pair of free throws. Demetria Bland ended the small run with a three-pointer.
Kaylah Henderson connected from the floor before a quick four point spurt put the Fleet back on top, 11-9. Erskine would lead 12-9 at the end of the quarter.
Second Quarter:
Erskine would score the opening points of the period with a three pointer. Aniah Patterson scored the next five points for the Hawks after a pair of steals by the Hawks to cut the deficit to 15-14. Demetria Bland knocked down a triple followed by a layup by Destiny Robinson forced an Erskine timeout, 19-15.
Aniah Patterson added another bucket in transition after another Chowan steal. After a free throw trip by the Fleet, Monique Jones and Keibra Hopkins posted a bucket each to push the lead to 25-16 and force another timeout.
After an Erskine bucket, Brianna Copeland answered with a three-pointer to give the Hawks a 28-18 lead at the intermission.
Third Quarter:
Chowan would come out of the locker room on an 11-2 run as Monique Jones started the run with a jumper. Aniah Patterson hit a jumper and a three-pointer before Demetria Bland hit a layup to lead 37-21. Bland added a pair from the stripe before Erskine ended the run with the front-end of the three-point play.
Aniah Patterson offset the free throws by the Fleet with a layup and a three-pointer. Kyani Moore went 1-2 from the line along with a layup to lead 47-28 heading into the final stanza.
Fourth Quarter:
Emaree Hinton and Jazmine Davis picked up a point at the line before Brianna Copeland knocked down a pair of three-pointers before Erskine posted the next five points.
Kyani Moore and Jahkeria Bagby notched a bucket each to push the lead to 59-36. Bagby added a layup and a pair from the stripe following more Erskine free throws.
Jazmine Davis scored in transition after a steal to cap off the victory 65-44.

Chowan returns home to take on Mount Olive on Tuesday, February 23. Tip-off is slated for 5pm.
