Hawks Avenge Loss To King At Home

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team avenged the loss against King from Friday evening with an 83-71 victory in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday afternoon.

Keibra Hopkins posted a team-high 17 points including 8-8 from the stripe.  Destiny Robinson recorded back-to-back double-doubles with 16 points and 10 rebounds. 

Demetria Bland chipped in with 15 points, while Aniah Patterson tallied 11 points.  Monique Jones hauled in 10 rebounds and eight points.

Chowan outscored King 28-10 in the second quarter while shooting 52.5% in the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

Demetria Bland put the Hawks on the board first with a layup.  Destiny Robinson tallied a jumper along with another bucket by Bland to keep pace with King.  Aniah Patterson picked up two points from the stripe before Kaylah Henderson hit a jumper to put the Hawks on top 10-9.

Monique Jones posted a bucket as King pulled ahead 16-12.  Aniah Patterson hit a jumper and Keibra Hopkins knocked down a triple to cut the deficit to one, 18-17.

King would lead 20-17 at the end of the opening quarter.

Second Quarter:

Destiny Robinson and Aniah Patterson opened the scoring in the period with a pair of buckets.  Patterson answered a three-pointer from King with a triple before Robinson added a layup to give the Hawks a 26-23 lead.

The Hawks would finish the final seven minutes of the quarter on a 19-5 run to take a 45-30 lead into the locker room.  Aniah Patterson sparked the rally with a jumper followed by a layup by Emaree Hinton and a triple by Demetria Bland.

King added a bucket before Demetria Bland posted a layup along with a bucket each by Emaree Hinton and Kaylah Henderson to see the lead move to double-digits.  Brianna Copeland knocked down back-to-back triples for the momentum into the locker room.

Third Quarter:

Demetria Bland and Destiny Robinson tallied a bucket each to push the lead to 17, 49-32, early in the period.  King would go on a 6-0 run before a lull in the action.  Monique Jones posted a layup along with a basket by Robinson and Hinton before King chipped away to cut the deficit to single-digits.

The Tornado cut the deficit to five, 55-50 before Keibra Hopkins hit a layup to lead 57-50 heading into the final stanza.

Fourth Quarter:

A pair from the stripe by Destiny Robinson and an old-fashioned three-point play by Keibra Hopkins offset the three-pointer by King to open the quarter.

A layup by Destiny Robinson and jumper by Demetria Bland pushed the lead back to double-digits, 66-56, with 7:21 remaining.

Keibra Hopkins converted four free throws to keep the Tornado at-bay, 70-63.  Monique Jones posted back-to-back buckets along with a layup by Destiny Robinson and a bucket by Hopkins to push the advantage back to double-digits, 79-69.

Demetria Bland and Keibra Hopkins converted from the stripe to take the victory, 83-71.

Chowan will travel to Belmont, N.C. to take on the top-ranked Belmont Abbey Crusaders on Tuesday, February 16.  Tip-off is slated for 5pm.
