Hawks Dealt OT Loss After Fourth Quarter Surge

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – A late run by the Chowan Women's Basketball forced overtime before succumbing to a 76-71 loss at the hands of King in Conference Carolinas action on Friday.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Monique Jones posted a career-high 19 points to pace the Hawks.  Demetria Bland recorded a season-high 19 points.  Destiny Robinson tallied a double-double with 16 points and a career-high 19 rebounds.  Robinson also had six rejections.

The Hawks trailed by 18 with 5:09 remaining in the third quarter before leading 63-60 with 10 seconds remaining in the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

King jumped out to an early 10-3 lead as Demetria Bland scored the lone basket for the Hawks.  Monique Jones and Jahkeria Bagby tallied a bucket as King led 13-7 midway through the opening stanza.

Monique Jones posted a bucket and Jahkeria Bagby completed the three-point play to cut the deficit to one, 13-12.  Demetria Bland connected from the floor before a pair of free throws by the Tornado allowed King to lead 15-14 at the end of the first quarter.

Second Quarter:

Destiny Robinson scored the first four points in the quarter to five the Hawks an 18-15 advantage.  Aniah Patterson knocked down a triple to offset a King trey to maintain the lead.  Monique Jones chipped in with three more points and Patterson added a jumper to lead 26-22.

The Tornado ended the half on a 14-0 run to lead 36-26 at the intermission.

Third Quarter:

King continued their run with an 8-0 spurt out of the locker room to lead 44-26.  Monique Jones posted back-to-back buckets to end the run, 46-30.

Demetria Bland, Jahkeria Bagby and Aniah Patterson tallied a bucket each to cut the deficit to 10, 46-36.  Bland knocked down a triple to cut the deficit to single-digits before a pair of free throws by the Tornado pushed things back, 50-39.

Destiny Robinson added a layup to end the quarter to trail 50-41.

Fourth Quarter:

Monique Jones and Destiny Robinson posted a bucket each to start the quarter to cut the deficit to six, 51-45, with 8:49 remaining.

King pushed their lead back to 10 on two occasions before Destiny Robinson sparked a run with a layup.  Monique Jones added a layup and Demetria Bland knocked down a trey to trim the deficit to five, 59-54, with 2:43 left in regulation.

After a free throw by the Tornado, Demetria Bland connected from deep and Destiny Robinson notched a layup.  Monique Jones gave the Hawks a 61-60 advantage with 51 seconds left.

Demetria Bland hit an acrobatic jumper with 10 seconds left to give the Hawks a 63-60 lead.  King would answer with a game-tying three-pointer on the next possession to send the contest into overtime.

Overtime:

Demetria Bland scored first in the period with a layup off the jump ball before a 7-0 run by King swung the momentum, 70-65.

Destiny Robinson connected from the stripe for a pair and added a layup to trail 71-69 with 37 seconds left.  Monique Jones added a layup to cut the deficit to one, 72-71, with 17 ticks left.

King salted the contest away at the stripe as the Hawks were unable to connect from the floor down the stretch.

UP NEXT

Chowan and King will wrap up the two game series on Saturday, February 13.  Tip-off is slated for 2pm.
