MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team grinded out an 86-77 overtime victory in Conference Carolinas play against Francis Marion on Wednesday afternoon behind five players in double-figures.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Destiny Robinson and Monique Jones recorded a double-double in the contest with Robinson posting 19 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks.  Jones tallied 14 points, 14 rebounds, and four steals.

Demetria Bland chipped in with 17 points and six steals, while Olivia Gaither and Keibra Hopkins scored 10 points each.  Gaither and Aniah Patterson posted five assists each.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

Destiny Robinson put the Hawks on the board early with a layup before Monique Jones and Robinson added a bucket to even the score at 6-all.  Robinson added another layup to give the Hawks the small lead.

Both teams added baskets as Monique Jones tallied a jumper before Destiny Robinson and Keibra Hopkins scored to lead 14-10.  Demetria Bland hit a three-pointer prior to Francis Marion ending the quarter on a small run to trail 17-14.

Second Quarter:

Destiny Robinson picked up a point at the stripe before Keibra Hopkins hit a three-pointer.  FMU would go on a 6-0 run to lead 22-21 as Hopkins knocked down a jumper before a 5-0 run by the Patriots allowed FMU to lead 27-23.

A pair of buckets by Jahkeria Bagby evened the score at 27-all midway through the quarter.  The Patriots would try to pull away, 30-27 before Aniah Patterson sparked an 11-0 run to lead 38-30 with a jumper.  Keibra Hopkins connected from deep before Destiny Robinson and Patterson added a pair from the stripe and Monique Jones added a layup in transition.

Monique Jones picked up a point before the end of the half to lead 39-34 at the break.

Third Quarter:

FMU fought back to close the gap to 41-40 three minutes into the half as Demetria Bland picked up a pair of points at the stripe.  Destiny Robinson connected from the floor for the first basket for the Hawks in the half.

A quick 5-0 run by the Patriots handed them a 45-43 advantage before Olivia Gaither hit a jumper.  Both teams traded baskets as Gaither and Destiny Robinson posted jumpers.  Demetria Bland knocked down a triple to lead 52-49 with 1:55 remaining in the period.

Demetria Bland hit from deep in transition to lead 55-51 heading into the fourth quarter.

Fourth Quarter:

Aniah Patterson and Olivia Gaither scored to keep the Hawks in front early in the period.  Monique Jones scored the next five points for the Hawks to lead 64-58 midway through the final period.

Destiny Robinson hit a jumper and Aniah Patterson hit a pair of free throws as FMU evened the score at 68-all with 1:28 remaining.

Demetria Bland hit a jumper to trade a basket with FMU before Destiny Robinson posted a layup with seven seconds left to lead 72-70.  The Patriots would connect from the floor before the buzzer to send the game into overtime knotted up at 72-all.

Overtime:

The Hawks came out strong with a 10-2 run in overtime.  Monique Jones posted a layup before FMU answered.  Jahkeria Bagby pushed the Hawks forward with a bucket before Demetria Bland and Olivia Gaither scored three points each.

FMU closed the gap to 82-77 with 42 seconds remaining before the Hawks finished off the contest at the stripe for the 86-77 victory.
