Hawks Capture King Behind Robinson's Triple-Double

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – Destiny Robinson notches her first career triple-double as the Hawks soar past King in the final game of 2021 to a tune of 82-62 in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday afternoon.

Destiny Robinson produced the first triple-double in program history (NCAA Division II era) with 17 points, 12 rebounds, and a school-record 11 blocks to go with four assists and four steals.  Chowan recorded 17 total blocks, a program best.

Olivia Gaither scored a career-high 19 points going 5-8 from behind the arc.  Monique Jones notched her second consecutive double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.  Tyaysia Sharpe and Aniah Patterson posted 10 points each.  Patterson tallied six assists.

The final 11:19, the Hawks outscored King 31-10 after trailing 52-51.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

Monique Jones started the scoring for the Hawks with a layup.  Destiny Robinson posted a layup to offset the King bucket before Olivia Gaither knocked down a triple.  Robinson added another layup to lead 9-2.  Jones and Robinson posted a layup before Tyaysia Sharpe knocked down a three-pointer to put the Hawks up 16-6.

Jahkeria Bagby added a layup as King closed the gap to 19-14.  Olivia Gaither connected from deep to lead 22-14 at the end of the quarter.

Second Quarter:

Destiny Robinson notched a layup to start the period as Olivia Gaither connected from deep again.  King would make a run to cut the deficit to 27-20 before Gaither dialed up another trey.

Demetria Bland tallied a bucket and Monique Jones posted a three-point play to keep the advantage, 35-26.  After a pair of free throws by Aniah Patterson, the Tornado moved the deficit to just four, 37-33.  

Destiny Robinson ended any threats to finish off the half with a pair of blocks adding a layup along with a bucket from Monique Jones to lead 41-33 at the intermission.

Third Quarter:

The Tornado came out of the locker room on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to one, 41-40.  Monique Jones tallied a jumper as both teams traded buckets.  Olivia Gaither knocked down a pair to keep the Hawks in front, 47-44.

Aniah Patterson knocked down a jumper before King went on a 6-0 run to take their first lead of the contest, 50-49.  Patterson handed the lead back to the Hawks with a jumper before a pair of free throws allowed King to lead 52-51 with 1:40 remaining in the quarter.

Destiny Robinson sparked a quick 5-0 run to end the period with a pair of free throws before Tyaysia Sharpe knocked down a triple to lead 56-52 at the end of the third stanza.

Fourth Quarter:

The run continued for the Hawks into the period with seven more points.  Olivia Gaither knocked down a triple along with a jumper by Tyaysia Sharpe and a pair from the stripe by Monique Jones to lead 63-52.

After a pair of free throws by the Tornado, Destiny Robinson added a pair of her own and Aniah Patterson added a jumper.  The Tornado collected four straight points before Patterson push the lead back to double-figures with a layup in transition sparking a Hawk run.

The Hawks finished off the contest on a 13-4 run to put the contest out of reach.  Demetria Bland posted a transition bucket before Destiny Robinson tallied a jumper.  Bland and Monique Jones added a bucket as Tyaysia Sharpe posted a pair from the stripe.

Kashara Simpson ended the contest with a jumper.

UP NEXT

Chowan will take their momentum into 2022 as the Hawks return to the floor on January 4 as the Hawks make the return trip to Pembroke, N.C. to take on UNC Pembroke in Conference Carolinas action.
