Hawks Have Hot Hand In Sweep Over Warriors

CENTRAL, S.C. – The Chowan Volleyball team picked up a 3-0 sweep over Southern Wesleyan in Conference Carolinas action on the road on Friday evening after posting their season-best hitting percentage.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Madison Hall paced the offense with 12 kills.  Anamarie Colon-Calero notched nine kills with Chloe Putnam posting eight.  Colon-Calero notched 3.0 total blocks, with Putnam contributing with 2.5 blocks.

Ciara Ortega came up one dig short of a double-double with 27 assists and nine digs.  Natalia Vega-Aponte posted 21 digs, Hadley Prince chipped in with 15 digs, while Katie Houston notched 10 digs.

Chowan hit an in-season best .304 with 51 kills and 13 errors, while SWU hit .108 with 27 kills and 14 errors.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set:

Anixa Rosa-Martinez put the Hawks on the board with a kill.  Anamarie Colon-Calero followed suit.  Rosa-Martinez added two more kills along with a kill by Natalia Vega-Aponte to even the score at 6-all early.

Madison Hall posted a pair of kills before Haydon Ahlers notched a kill.  Nyah Powers and Anamarie Colon-Calero teamed up for a block before Hall and Anixa Rosa-Martinez evened the score up at 12-all.

Anamarie Colon-Calero notched a kill before adding an assisted block with Chloe Putnam to lead 15-12.

Both teams would trade points down the stretch before Anamarie Colon-Calero started a run for the Hawks with a kill.  Katie Houston added a kill before Colon-Calero collected a solo block.

Chloe Putnam finished off the set with a pair of kills to take the 25-21 victory.

Second Set:

Madison Hall and Anamarie Colon-Calero started the scoring for the Hawks in the set.  Nyah Powers added a kill.  Chloe Putnam posted a pair of kills before Haydon Ahlers and Hall collected a kill to lead 11-5.

After a SWU timeout, Haydon Ahlers and Chloe Putnam teamed up for a block.  Madison Hall sparked a run with a kill before Chloe Putnam and Ciara Ortega served an ace, Hall adding another kill and Anamarie Colon-Calero and Nyah Powers posting a block to lead 17-9.

Nyah Powers would push the lead forward with three kills by Anixa Rosa-Martinez.  Anamarie Colon-Calero and Chloe Putnam collected a kill before finishing off the set 25-12.

Third Set:

Chowan would jump out in front with a 9-2 advantage.  Anamarie Colon-Calero, Nyah Powers, Anixa Rosa-Martinez, and Chloe Putnam started the set with a kill each.  Putnam and Rosa-Martinez added a block before Colon-Calero and Rosa-Martinez collected a kill.

Anixa Rosa-Martinez, Chloe Putnam, Haydon Ahlers, and Madison Hall pushed the advantage to 14-5 before a Warriors' timeout.

SWU closed the gap to 15-10 before Madison Hall ended the run with a kill.  Anamarie Colon-Calero posted a pair of kills before Hall and Nyah Powers pushed the lead to 20-13.

Alexa Lyons continued the scoring with a kill prior to a kill by Chloe Putnam and ace by Ellie Middleton to finish off the set and match 25-15.

Chowan will travel to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on Converse in the final league contest of the season on Saturday, November 6.  First serve is at 2pm.
