Cold Shooting Dooms Hawks Against UNCP

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Men's Basketball was unable to shake the cold shooting quick enough as an early deficit continued for the Hawks in an 82-63 loss to UNC Pembroke in Conference Carolinas action on Tuesday evening.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Christian Koonce paced the way with a season-high 19 points.  Cheick Traore added 12 points and seven rebounds.  Aaron James came off the bench to produce 11 points.  RJ Wilson hauled in eight rebounds.

The Hawks shot 22.6% (7-31) in the first half before shooting 45.2% (14-31) in the second half.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

Christian Koonce opened the scoring with the first four points for the Hawks before Jay Estime added a layup in transition off a steal from Jaylen Dilliard to lead 6-5 early.

UNC Pembroke would go on a 28-4 run as the Hawks picked up points at the free throw line for the Braves to lead 33-10.  Christian Koonce ended the run with a three-pointer and a jumper.

The Braves extended their lead to 40-15 before Chase Barnett connected from the floor, Cheick Traore hit a pair of free throws and RJ Wilson hit a three-pointer to trail 40-22.

UNCP led 42-22 at the half.

Second Half:

Christian Koonce knocked down a three-pointer to start the half before Cheick Traore added a pair of layups and Koonce knocked down a jumper to trim the deficit to 48-31.

Jay Estime connected from deep along with a pair of freebies by Donavon Martin continued to chip away at the deficit, 52-36, with 11:54 remaining.  Christian Koonce added a jumper and a three-pointer and Estime hit a jumper to keep pace with the Braves.

Jaylen Dilliard picked up a jumper, RJ Wilson added a pair from the stripe, and Aaron James hit a three-pointer as the Hawks were unable to move closer in the score, 67-50.

Aaron James and Cheick Traore scored the final 13 points in the contest for the Hawks.

UP NEXT

Chowan continues their homestand as the Hawks host Erskine in a Conference Carolinas contest on Friday, December 3.  Tip-off is slated for 7pm.
