Hawks Defense Stifles Bobcats With Press In Big Win

BANNER ELK, N.C. –  The Chowan Women's Basketball team picked up the dominating win over Lees-McRae to start Conference Carolinas play on Tuesday evening on the road.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Destiny Robinson collected her third double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds.  Aniah Patterson chipped in with 12 points and eight rebounds.  Olivia Gaither posted 11 points with three assists and two steals.

Chowan forced 26 turnovers with their full court press collecting 14 steals.  The Hawks outrebounded Lees-McRae 50-35 with a 38-18 advantage in points in the paint and 20-5 in second chance points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

Chowan opened the contest on a 6-0 run to force a Lees-McRae timeout.  Destiny Robinson opened the scoring with a layup followed by a short jumper by Monique Jones and a transition layup by Aniah Patterson.

Out of the timeout, Lees-McRae would get on the board before Destiny Robinson added another bucket.  LMC went on a 6-0 run to even the contest, 8-all.  Destiny Robinson ended the run to spark a run for the Hawks as Olivia Gaither knocked down a triple.  Robinson collected a pair from the stripe to put the Hawks up 15-8.

LMC slowed the run before Demetria Bland added a layup in transition.  After a basket by LMC, Destiny Robinson collected another basket.  Keibra Hopkins knocked down a pair from the stripe to lead 21-12.

 Second Quarter:

The Bobcats started the quarter with a three-pointer before Olivia Gaither converted the three-point play following the putback by Gaither.  Gaither knocked down a triple from the right corner to put the Hawks up by double-digits, 27-15.

Tyaysia Sharpe would pick up a point at the stripe before Lees-McRae cut the deficit to 28-21 with a 6-0 run.  Destiny Robinson ended the run with an old-fashioned three-point play off the in-bound to put the Hawks back up to double-digits.

LMC picked up a pair at the stripe before Aniah Patterson knocked down a three-pointer to push the lead to 34-23.  Destiny Robinson added a layup as the shot clock was expiring.  The Bobcats added two more from the stripe before Patterson collected a layup to maintain the advantage, 38-25.

Keibra Hopkins added a point from the stripe before Demetria Bland collected a putback bucket to lead 41-27.  Hopkins picked up another point at the stripe as the Hawks led 42-29 at the half.

Third Quarter:

LMC opened the half with a pair of baskets before Aniah Patterson knocked down a free throw and a layup after a steal during the full court press.  Destiny Robinson added a layup prior to the Bobcats picking up a pair at the stripe, 47-35.

Emaree Hinton secured a putback bucket before both teams go scoreless over the next three minutes.  LMC picked up a pair at the stripe before Aniah Patterson connected from the floor to end the drought with a pull up jumper.  Monique Jones and Keibra Hopkins add a bucket in transition to push the advantage to 55-38.

Monique Jones went 1-2 from the stripe along with a layup by Destiny Robinson to lead 58-41 at the end of the quarter.

Fourth Quarter:

Olivia Gaither opened the period with a putback basket.  Demetria Bland knocked down a triple to put the Hawks up 63-41 with 8:19 remaining.  LMC knocked down a three-pointer to get on the board in the quarter.  The Bobcats added a three-point play for a quick 6-0 run, 63-47.

Both teams were held scoreless for four minutes as Brianna Copeland knocked down a triple to end the drought for the Hawks.  LMC picked up a point at the stripe to end their scoring drought.  Shequana Jackson connected from the floor to put the Hawks up 68-48.

Brianna Copeland ended the scoring with a three-pointer to take the victory 71-48.

UP NEXT

Chowan will welcome UNC Pembroke to Murfreesboro for their home opener on Tuesday, November 30.  Tip-off is slated for 5pm.
