Hawks Upset Division Leader FMU On Senior Day

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Volleyball team pulled the upset against the Conference Carolinas leader, Francis Marion, 3-1 on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon.

Anixa Rosa-Martinez posted a team-high 18 kills to go with nine digs.  Ciara Ortega posted a double-double with 28 assists and 10 digs.  Madison Hall notched 10 kills, while Anamarie Colon-Calero added nine kills.

Natalia Vega-Aponte added 39 digs to her total, while Hadley Prince collected 20 digs.  Prince also posted four service aces.

Alondra Rivera-Miranda posted 15 assists and five digs.  Nyah Powers tallied 2.5 blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set:

Francis Marion opened the contest with four straight points before Madison Hall tallied a kill to put the Hawks on the board and start a five point rally for the Hawks.  Anamarie Colon-Calero added a kill before Anixa Rosa-Martinez posted two kills along with a service ace by Hadley Prince to give the Hawks a 5-4 lead.

Both sides would trade points with Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Haydon Ahlers picking up kills.  Chloe Putnam and Madison Hall added to the total before Ahlers and Anamarie Colon-Calero tacked on a kill to trail 14-13.

A block by Nyah Powers allowed the Hawks to lead 18-15.  Chowan pushed their lead to 22-17 as Ciara Ortega collected a pair of kills and Anamarie Colon-Calero served up an ace.

Chloe Putnam and Madison Hall posted a kill to finish off the opening set 25-19.

Second Set:

Anamarie Colon-Calero and Madison Hall started the scoring in the set with a kill each.  Hall, Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Colon-Calero added a kill before a pair of aces by Hadley Prince put the Hawks up 8-3.

Two kills by Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Haydon Ahlers kept the Hawks in front despite a rally by the Patriots.  Nyah Powers, Rosa-Martinez and Anamarie Colon-Calero pushed the advantage to 16-12 with a trio of kills.

Another three kills by Anixa Rosa-Martinez put the Hawks up 20-16.  FMU closed the gap to 20-19 before Madison Hall added a kill and Chloe Putnam posted an ace.  Hall and Anamarie Colon-Calero notched a kill to put the Hawks up 2-0 in the match to finish off the set 25-20.

Third Set:

Anamarie Colon-Calero started the scoring for the Hawks before Nyah Powers and Anixa Rosa-Martinez teamed up for a block.  Hadley Prince added an ace to lead 4-2.  Rosa-Martinez added the next four kills to lead 10-5.

FMU rattled off six straight points to take the lead 13-11.  A pair of kills by Haydon Ahlers knotted the score at 14-all.

Anamarie Colon-Calero and Anixa Rosa-Martinez posted a kill each to lead 18-17 before the Patriots regained the lead 21-19.

Madison Hall and Chloe Putnam posted an assisted block to even the score at 22-all before FMU took the set 25-23.

Fourth Set:

Madison Hall put the Hawks on the board in the set with a kill.  Nyah Powers sparked a 5-0 run with a kill before Chloe Putnam, Ciara Ortega, and Anixa Rosa-Martinez posted a kill to lead 6-2.

The Hawks would extend their lead to 13-4 as Haydon Ahlers started the run with a kill.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez notched a service ace and Chloe Putnam posted a kill during the rally.

Chowan continued to push forward with a kill by Madison Hall and Anamarie Colon-Calero.  Colon-Calero and Nyah Powers posted a pair of assisted blocks to lead 19-8.

Anixa Rosa-Martinez added a kill before the Patriots rallied back to cut the deficit to 22-21.

Two FMU miscues and a service ace by Anixa Rosa-Martinez finished off the set and match to claim the upset.

Chowan wraps up the home slate on Tuesday, November 2 as the Hawks take on UNC Pembroke at 6pm in Conference Carolinas action.
