Hawks Avoid Barton Road Block To Snap Skid

WILSON, N.C. – The Chowan Volleyball team avoided the Barton road block to snap a 12 match losing streak after picking up a tough five set victory in Conference Carolinas action on Friday evening.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Madison Hall paced the Hawks with 16 kills.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs.  Ciara Ortega notched a double-double with 27 assists and 10 digs.

Katie Houston and Hadley Prince collected 14 digs each, while Natalie Vega-Aponte registered 35 digs to lead the defense.

Barton tallied 15.0 total blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set:

Nyah Powers would put the Hawks on the board in the first set with a block.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Anamarie Colon-Calero added a kill each to keep the score level.

The Bulldogs took a small lead before Haydon Ahlers and Chloe Putnam notched a kill to close the gap to 8-7.  Anamarie Colon-Calero posted a kill and Hadley Prince collected a service ace to even the score at 13-all.

Madison Hall and Chloe Putnam picked up a kill down the stretch along with a service ace by Ciara Ortega to move the score to 20-all.

Barton would find five of the final six points to take the opening set 25-21.

Second Set:

Barton opened the set with an 8-2 run.  A pair of kills by Anamarie Colon-Calero and an ace cut into the deficit.

The Bulldogs maintained distance as Madison Hall and Anixa Rosa-Martinez added a pair of kills and a kill by Anamarie Colon-Calero to cut the deficit to 15-13.

Barton would lead 23-19 before the Hawks made a rally.  Madison Hall started the run with an ace along with a kill by Katie Houston and another ace by Hall to give the Hawks a 24-23 lead.

A service ace and a kill by Madison Hall allowed the Hawks to even the set with the 27-25 set victory.

Third Set:

Chowan started the set with a 4-1 lead.  Ciara Ortega posted the lone point for the Hawks on a service ace as Barton miscues handed the Hawks points.

Barton evened the score at 4-all before a kill by Anamarie Colon-Calero and Chloe Putnam.  The Bulldogs rallied to take an 11-7 lead prior to Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Madison Hall registering a kill to close the gap to 11-10.

Madison Hall and Haydon Ahlers allowed the Hawks to take a 16-13 lead.  Ciara Ortega added a kill and service ace to lead 19-17.

The Bulldogs fought back to take the set in extra points, 26-24, to lead 2-1.

Fourth Set:

The Hawks would start the fourth set with a block by Nyah Powers before a kill by Anixa Rosa-Martinez and a block by Chloe Putnam put the Hawks up 5-3.

A pair of kills by Anixa Rosa-Martinez and a kill by Madison Hall allowed the Hawks to lead 10-6.  Nyah Powers added another block before Anixa Rosa-Martinez posted a block and a kill to spark a run for the Hawks.  Chloe Putnam notched a kill and a service ace by Natalia Vega-Aponte to lead 17-10 and force a Barton timeout.

Chloe Putnam and Anixa Rosa-Martinez pushed the lead forward for the Hawks.  Haydon Ahlers notched a block before Madison Hall finished off the set with a pair of kills, 25-17, to force a fifth set.

Fifth Set:

Both teams swapped points early in the set with Nyah Powers adding a block to start the set.  Hadley Prince posted a service ace before Anixa Rosa-Martinez collected two kills and a kill by Ciara Ortega forced a Barton timeout, 6-3.

Anamarie Colon-Calero posted three kills along with a kill by Haydon Ahlers pushed the advantage to 13-6.

The Hawks finished off the match grabbing a point on a Barton service error and a kill by Madison Hall.

UP NEXT

Chowan returns home to take on Francis Marion in a Conference Carolinas battle on Saturday, October 30 at 2pm.  The Hawks will celebrate senior day prior to opening serve for Alondra Rivera-Miranda, Meghan Mutter, Ciara Ortega, and Natalia Vega-Aponte.
