Chowan outgained Elizabeth City State by 230 yards of total offense in a 32-28 loss, but the difference in the contest came on special teams as the Vikings registered 252 yards in the return game including a blocked punt for a touchdown.
Bryce Witt threw for a program-best 474 yards with four touchdowns and no turnovers leading to a CIAA Quarterback of the Week selection. Imeek Watkins hauled in 11 catches for 173 yards and two touchdowns to be named CIAA Receiver of the Week.
HAWK HIGHLIGHTS
Chowan enters the contest with a 5-3 overall record and a 2-3 clip in CIAA action. During the three game skid, the Hawks are averaging 20.7 points per game while allowing 28.0 points. The Hawks still lead the CIAA in points per game with 39.9.
Bryce Witt leads the CIAA in completions (176), passing yards (2392), passing touchdowns (25), and passing yards per game (299.0). Witt leads in all of those categories in CIAA-only play as well.
Laurence King and Imeek Watkins are second and third in the CIAA in receiving yards per game with 82.3 and 82.1 yards respectively. Both are separated by one receiving yard (658/657) to lead the CIAA in yards and tied with eight touchdowns.
Isaac Anderson and Gilberto Ortiz are in the top-five in the CIAA in tackles for loss with 19.0 and 15.0 TFLs respectively. Anderson (8.0) and Rafiq Abdul-Wahid (7.5) are in the top-five in sacks. Ortiz sits at sixth in the CIAA with 7.0 sacks. As a defense the Hawks rank first in sacks (35.0), fourth in yards allowed (277.5), and sixth in points allowed (23.0)
AVOIDING THE TROJAN HORSE
Virginia State enters the weekend with a 3-4 overall record and a 3-2 clip in CIAA play. The Trojans have won three of their last four with their lone loss coming in a shootout against Bowie State two weeks ago.
Darius Hagans leads the team with 342 yards rushing. The Trojans have seen four different signal callers this season producing 1302 yards passing, nine touchdowns and six interceptions.
Javon Frazier is tied for the league-lead in sacks with 8.5 this season. Adonte Braxton is fourth with 7.0. VSU is second in the CIAA in team sacks with 29.0.
