Vikings Block Hawks' Upset Bid In Dig Pink Game

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Volleyball team was blocked on their upset bid of rival Elizabeth City State in their annual Dig Pink contest in non-conference action on Tuesday evening.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORES

Madison Hall produced a career-high 16 kills and 10 digs to notch her first double-double.  Natalia Vega-Aponte registered 37 digs on the evening.

Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Anamarie Colon-Calero tallied eight kills each, while Haydon Ahlers collected six kills.  Colon-Calero posted 4.0 total blocks.

Elizabeth City State had 15.0 total blocks as a team.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set:

Elizabeth City State opened up the contest on a 6-2 run before Anamarie Colon-Calero put the Hawks on the board with a kill.

Madison Hall sparked a rally with four kills to cut the deficit to 15-11.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Nyah Powers notched a kill before Alexa Woolson produced a service ace and Haydon Ahlers added a kill to close the gap to 18-17.

Chloe Putnam and Anamarie Colon-Calero registered a kill as the Hawks took advantage of the Vikings' miscues to even the match at 21-all.

Madison Hall posted two kills to finish off the opening set 26-24.

Second Set:

Anamarie Colon-Calero, Nyah Powers, Anixa Rosa-Martinez, and Haydon Ahlers notched a kill each in the opening points of the set.

Chloe Putnam sparked a rally with a kill followed by a block by Haydon Ahlers and Anamarie Colon-Calero and a kill by Madison Hall to take a 10-9 lead.

Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Anamarie Colon-Calero picked up a kill each and a block by Colon-Calero allowed the Hawks to hold a slim 16-15 advantage.

Madison Hall and Haydon Ahlers kept the Hawks on top before a 6-1 run by the Vikings allowed ECSU to even the set with a 25-21 win.

Third Set:

ECSU doubled up the Hawks early in the set, 10-5 before Haydon Ahlers and Madison Hall sparked the offense.  Hall and Anamarie Colon-Calero teamed up for a block before Hall tallied a kill to trail 12-9.

The Vikings increased their lead to 17-9 before Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Chloe Putnam notched a kill.  The Hawks made a small rally to cut the deficit to 24-19 after a kill by Haydon Ahlers and a service ace by Ciara Ortega.

Fourth Set:

Anamarie Colon-Calero opened the set with a pair of kills.  Madison Hall added a kill before the Vikings pushed their lead to 12-4.

Haydon Ahlers slowed the run with a kill before Madison Hall added a pair of kills.  Anamarie Colon-Calero and Anixa Rosa-Martinez continued the rally with a kill along with an ace by Hall to close the gap to 17-12.

ECSU responded with a run to push their lead to 23-12 before a kill by Chloe Putnam and a service ace by Anamarie Colon-Calero slowed the attack.

The Vikings took the set 25-14.

Chowan jumps back into Conference Carolinas play as the Hawks take the short drive to Wilson, N.C. to take on Barton on Friday, October 29.  First serve is at 7pm.
