The nationally-ranked Hawks and Bulldogs had a defensive battle with a combined 279 yards of total offense. Chowan led with 167 yards of total offense. The defenses shined brightly for both teams as Chowan recorded five sacks on the day. Bowie State posted a defensive touchdown off two fumbles.
Chowan was held to a season-low three points, while the Hawks' defense allowed only seven points in a 14-3 loss to Bowie State.
HAWK HIGHLIGHTS
Chowan dropped their first game of the season moving to 5-1 on the season and 2-1 in CIAA action. The Hawks will look to bounce back from being held to a mere three points after leading the country with a 51.2 points per game average. The Hawks continue to lead the CIAA in points per game with 43.3 points while allowing 19.0 points on defense.
Tyrek McNeil is fourth in the CIAA with 62.7 rushing yards per game. Bryce Witt leads the CIAA in completion percentage (66.5), yards (1642), TDs (20), average (273.7) and efficiency (171.8). Witt also leads in rushing touchdowns with eight.
Laurence King is second in the CIAA in receiving yards per game (94.2) and is first in touchdowns (7), yards (565), and receptions (43).
Isaac Anderson and Gilberto Ortiz are in the top-five in the CIAA in tackles for loss with 11.5 and 11.0 TFLs respectively. Anderson (6.0) and Rafiq Abdul-Wahid (6.5) are in the top-five in sacks. Ortiz sits at sixth in the CIAA with 5.5 sacks. As a defense the Hawks rank first in sacks (28.0), third in yards allowed (229.7), and fourth in points allowed (19.0)
TAMING THE PANTHERS
Virginia Union enters the contest with a 3-3 overall record and a 2-1 record in the CIAA. The Panthers are coming off a shutout victory against Lincoln (32-0). VUU picked up their three wins this season against UVA-Lynchburg, Johnson C. Smith, and Lincoln, who are a combined 0-17.
VUU averages 27.7 points per game while allowing 22.3 points an outing. Jada Byers is second in the CIAA in rushing yards per game (73.5) and touchdowns (5). Khalid Morris has thrown for 1132 yards and nine touchdowns, connecting with Charles Hall for 17 receptions for 487 yards and five touchdowns.
Tovias Parker leads the team with 39 tackles, while Xzavier Hines has 11.0 TFLs and 4.0 sacks on the season.
