Freebies Haunt Hawks Again In Loss To Crusaders

TIGERVILLE, S.C. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team committed 25 fouls leading to 40 free throw attempts for North Greenville in a 76-73 loss in the second meeting in as many days in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Aniah Patterson and Monique Jones posted career-highs led by Patterson with 23 points on 10-16 shooting from the floor.  Jones added a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Keibra Hopkins (12 points) and Demetria Bland (10 points) were in double-figures.

For the second straight game, Chowan led in most statistical categories besides free throws.  Chowan was 12-21 from the line, while North Greenville went 35-40.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

Aniah Patterson put the Hawks on the board early with a triple.  NGU would go on a 9-0 run grabbing five points from the charity stripe to lead 9-3.  Emaree Hinton ended the six minute scoring drought with a 1-2 trip to the line.  NGU extended their lead with a three pointer, 12-4.  Patterson connected from the floor for the second bucket of the contest, but NGU answered with a jumper at the other end.

After a pair of free throws by NGU, Aniah Patterson knocked down another three-pointer to trail 16-9 at the end of the quarter.

Second Quarter:

Monique Jones opened the scoring for the Hawks in the second stanza with back-to-back buckets to cut the deficit to 16-13.  NGU would convert from the line for a pair before Keibra Hopkins connected from deep, 18-16.

Brianna Copeland evened the score at 18-all with a pair of freebies with 7:17 remaining in the opening half.  Aniah Patterson continued the hot start with a pair of buckets to give the Hawks a 22-18 lead.  NGU regained the lead with an 8-0 run picking up points from the free throw line and one basket, 26-22.

Jahkeria Bagby ended the run with four free throws to even the score at 26-all before halftime.

Third Quarter:

Keibra Hopkins scored the first six points for the Hawks while the Crusaders continued to answer.  Aniah Patterson scored a bucket to give the Hawks a four point lead, 34-30.  NGU picked up a bulk of their early points from the stripe before Patterson added another bucket to maintain their lead.

Keibra Hopkins continued with the hot hand in the half with a three pointer to give the Hawks a 39-35 lead.  Monique Jones added a layup after a steal.  NGU posted back-to-back triples to even the score at 41-all midway through the quarter.

After a bucket by Monique Jones, NGU went on a small 5-1 run to regain the lead, mostly at the charity stripe.  Aniah Patterson knocked down a triple to swap the lead in favor of the Hawks, 48-47.  The Crusaders continued to pick up points from the line before Demetria Bland scored a layup to pull the score to within one, 50-51, heading to the fourth quarter.

Fourth Quarter:

Monique Jones and Aniah Patterson picked up a bucket each before NGU went on a 7-0 run picking up points along the way at the stripe.  Demetria Bland slowed the run with a pair from the stripe to cut into the deficit, 60-56.

After a NGU timeout, Monique Jones offset a Crusader bucket with a layup of her own.  Demetria Bland knocked down a triple to cut the deficit to one, 62-61.  The Crusaders picked up two more points at the line and a layup to push their lead to five.

NGU pushed their advantage to nine, 70-61, before Monique Jones hit the front-end of the one-and-one.  Destiny Robinson scored a jumper to offset the NGU bucket with just over a minute to play, 72-65.

Monique Jones closed the gap with a three-point play along with a layup by Aniah Patterson to cut the deficit to two, 72-70, with 13.8 seconds remaining.  NGU salted away the victory at the stripe despite a three-pointer by Demetria Bland before the buzzer.

UP NEXT

Chowan returns home on Friday, January 22 to take on Converse in Conference Carolinas action.  Tip-off is slated for 5pm.
