Stallings Earns First, Hawks Soar Past Valkyries

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The sharp shooting second quarter by the Hawks allowed Chowan to soar to a 73-46 blowout victory over Converse in Conference Carolinas action on Friday evening.  The win secured Coach Lenise Stallings for NCAA win.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Brianna Copeland produced a career-high 18 points connecting on 6-7 from deep.  Aniah Patterson continued her scoring ways with 20 points.

Destiny Robinson chipped in with 12 points, five rebounds, and four blocks.  Monique Jones hauled in a team-high 13 rebounds.

Chowan shot 41.0% from the floor and knocked down 11 three-pointers.  Chowan shot 64.3% from the floor in the second quarter to outscore the Valkyries 26-7.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

Converse went on the attack off the tip knocking down a triple.  Aniah Patterson answered before an 8-0 run by the Valkyries pushed their lead to 11-3 and forced a Chowan timeout.

Destiny Robinson and Jahkeria Bagby ended the run with a pair of layups.  Converse tallied two from the stripe before another Robinson bucket closed the gap to 13-9.

Converse would net a layup and a free throw down the stretch, but a bucket by Destiny Robinson and a buzzer-beating triple by Brianna Copeland had the Hawks trailing 16-14 at the end of the opening stanza.

Second Quarter:

The Valkyries struck first in the quarter with a three-pointer to maintain their advantage but a quick 12-0 run by the Hawks forced a timeout.

Aniah Patterson started the run with a transition layup after swiping a pass.  Patterson knocked down a jumper prior to Brianna Copeland connecting from deep to give the Hawks a 21-19 lead.  Monique Jones joined in on the run with a layup and a corner trey by Copeland forced the timeout, 26-19.

The run continued as Aniah Patterson and Brianna Copeland knocked down back-to-back triples.  Patterson chipped in with a pair from the stripe and another three-pointer.  Copeland connected from deep to put the Hawks up 40-20 with 1:07 remaining.

Converse hit a triple with 53 ticks remaining after being held without a basket for 8:24.

The Hawks would go into the locker room with a 40-23 advantage.

Third Quarter:

Aniah Patterson started the scoring in the half with a layup.  Destiny Robinson posted a layup after a Converse three-pointer.  Monique Jones added the next three points along with a layup by Keibra Hopkins pushed the lead to 49-26.

After a lull in the action, Converse went on a small run, 7-2, with Destiny Robinson picking up a bucket in the mix.  Monique Jones and Demetria Bland added to the lead with a bucket to give the Hawks a 58-35 lead going into the final quarter.

Fourth Quarter:

Chowan went to the line early in the quarter as Destiny Robinson picked up a pair and Demetria Bland had a 1-2 effort.  Tyaysia Sharpe connected from deep for her first collegiate bucket to put the Hawks up 64-36.

Emaree Hinton traded freebies with the Valkyries before Demetria Bland hit a three-pointer.  Copeland would knock down a trey to end the scoring for the Hawks.

UP NEXT

Chowan and Converse return to the floor on Saturday, January 23 to square off in the second meeting.  Tip-off is slated for 2pm.
