Chowan Softball Splits At VSU Tournament

PETERSBURG, VA. – The Chowan Softball team split a pair of non-conference games on the opening day of the VSU Trojan Invite in Petersburg on Saturday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Jesse Gentry, Mikayla Luskin, Lindsey Stigler, and Paige Wilhelm recorded three hits each.

Delaney Devor blasted her first home run as a Hawk and drove in three runs.

EmaRae Flores picked up the win against Virginia State in the circle.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Chowan 11, Virginia State 10

Chowan jumped on the board in the bottom of the first inning as Delaney Devor singled with one-out to start the rally.  Devor would swipe second before coming around to score on Lindsey Stigler's RBI single to center.

The Hawks would add five runs in the bottom of the second as Jesse Genrty reached on an infield single.  Haleigh Reid doubled to score Gentry for the 2-0 lead.  Mikalya Luskin laid down a bunt single in front of the plate and swiped second with Reid standing on third.  Delaney Devor hit a three-run home run to push the lead to 5-0.

The lead increased to 8-0 in the bottom of the third as Meredith Morgan doubled with one-out.  Jesse Gentry drew a walk and Shannon Buchanan reached on an error to load the bases.  Haleigh Reid singled to plate a run and Paige Wilhelm plated a pair with a single to right center to lead 8-0.

Virginia State cut into the deficit in the top of the fourth inning with three runs on three hits and two errors.

Chowan would get those three runs back in the bottom of the inning as Brittany Parson led off with a single.  Meredith Morgan drew a walk before Jesse Gentry doubled home Parson and Morgan.  Shannon Buchanan singled home Gentry to push the lead to 11-3.

The Trojans rallied in the fifth to score six runs to cut the deficit to 11-9.

The Hawks looked to add more runs in the fifth inning as Mikayla Luskin singled down the right field line but would be caught stealing at second.  Paige Wilhelm singled to left before Delaney Devor and Brittany Parson drew walks to load the bases.  A fly out and a line out ended the threat.

Chowan loaded the bases again in the sixth as Jesse Gentry and Mikayla Luskin picked up singles.  Paige Wilhelm drew a walk but was left stranded with a ground out.

VSU inched closer in the top of the seventh with a run on three Hawk errors but Chowan was able to end the threat to take the close victory.

Chowan 1, Shippensburg 12 (five innings)

Brittany Parson picked up a two-out walk in the bottom of the first and moved to second on a Lindsey Stigler singled but was left stranded.

Shippensburg opened the scoring in the top of the third inning with a four run frame to lead 4-0.  The Raiders scored three unearned runs in the inning.

The Raiders extended their lead to 12-0 in the fourth inning on five hits and three free passes.

Chowan was able to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning as Lindsey Stigler led off the inning with a single to center.  Meredith Morgan singled to right field before Shannon Buchanan plated Stigler on a RBI single.

The Hawks were unable to produce a threat in the fifth to fall 12-1.

Chowan returns for the final day of the VSU Trojan Invite as the Hawks take on Pace and Bluefield State on Sunday in Petersburg.
