MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Softball team blasted their way to a home sweep over Virginia Union on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORES
Lindsey Stigler went 3-3 with two doubles, three RBI and two walks on the afternoon. Delaney Devor and Haleigh Reid also picked up three hits each.
Paige Wilhelm went 2-2 with a walk and a stolen base in game one. Brittany Parson recorded two doubles on the afternoon. Meredith Morgan slugged her second home run of the season.
Shannon Buchanan picked up three RBI with two doubles.
Megan Vincent moved to 2-0 in the circle with a complete game shutout allowing two hits and struck out eight.
EmaRae Flores picked up the win with 4.0 innings pitched allowing one run off one hit. Serena Riley pitched 1.0 inning in relief.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One: Chowan 8, Virginia Union 0 (five innings)
Delaney Devor picked up a double to start the bottom of the first inning but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple. Paige Wilhelm followed up with a single and swiped second. Brittany Parson drew a walk as Wilhelm took third on the wild pitch. Lindsey Stigler brought home Wilhelm with a double to left center. Jesse Gentry drew a walk to load the bases but was left stranded.
Virginia Union picked up their first hit in the second inning with a double but was left on the bags.
Chowan picked up two more runs in the bottom of the inning to lead 3-0. Haleigh Reid singled to start the inning and moved over to third on a ground out and passed ball. Paige Wilhelm drew a walk before moving to third on a wild pitch allowing Reid to score. Brittany Parson doubled to right allowing Wilhelm to score to lead 3-0. Lindsey Stigler and Jesse Gentry received the free pass before leaving the bases loaded.
The Hawks did more damage in the bottom of the fourth as Mikayla Luskin doubled to right center to start the inning. Luskin moved to third on a wild pitch. Delaney Devor drew a walk before Paige Wilhelm produced a RBI single. Lindsey Stigler picked up a single to left to score Devor. Jesse Gentry drew another walk before Meredith Morgan sent a three-run shot over the left field wall to lead 8-0.
Megan Vincent kept the shutout in the fifth inning after an infield single.
Game Two: Chowan 13, Virginia Union 2 (five innings)
Chowan would take the early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Delaney Devor started the inning with an infield single. Brooklynne Johnson drew a walk before a throwing error allowed Devor to score on Brittany Parson's fielder's choice. Lindsey Stigler drew a walk to load the bases before Lindsee Howard produced a RBI groundout.
The Hawks would explode for six runs off five hits and an error in the bottom of the second inning to lead 8-0. Shannon Buchanan started the inning with a double down the line. Kelsey Sonntag was hit by a pitch. Delaney Devor singled home Buchanan before a fielding error allowed Brooklynne Johnson to reach. Brittany Parson and Lindsey Stigler doubled to score a run each. Lindsee Howard drew a walk to load the bases before Buchanan doubled again to plate two more runs.
The lead increased in the bottom of the third to 13-0 as the Hawks took advantage of three errors. Mackenzie Taggart reached on an infield single before back to back doubles by Hannah Naifeh and Brooklynne Johnson plated the opening run. Haleigh Reid brought home two runs with a single before being thrown out at third.
Back-to-back errors by the pitcher allowed Alexis Grim and Lindsee Howard to reach. Jesse Gentry singled to center to load the bases. Shannonn Buchanan hit a sacrifice fly to plate a run. Kelsey Sonntag loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch. Mackenzie Taggart drew a walk to score the final run for the Hawks in the inning.
Virginia Union broke up the shutout and no-hit bid with a solo home run in the fourth. The Panthers tallied their final run in the top of the fifth with a ground out.
UP NEXT
Chowan will look to continue their momentum into the Francis Marion Tournament on February 14-16 in Florence, S.C. The Hawks will start with the host Patriots on Friday at 3pm. The tournament includes Francis Marion, Mercy, and Mars Hill.
